Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Stranger Things season 5 volume 2.
The final part of Stranger Things season 5 has put Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and her sister Kali (Linnea Berthelsen) in a difficult spot, where they must consider making the ultimate sacrifice to save everyone.
The latest season of the popular Netflix sci-fi series reveals that Kali has found out Dr. Brenner’s (Matthew Modine) program is running again. This time, it’s being led by Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton), who is relentlessly pursuing the sisters.
At the end of book two, Kali explains to Eleven that the only way to break the endless cycle is for both of them to sacrifice themselves, disappearing along with the Upside Down.

You know, what really struck me about Kali’s arc this season is how powerfully she connects personal growth with global impact. She’s arguing – and convincingly, I think – that helping your inner circle isn’t just a good deed, it actually ripples outward and benefits everyone. It’s a surprisingly profound point, and one that really resonated with me.
It’s a deeply personal question about difficult choices. What do you do when faced with impossible situations? What are you prepared to give up? It’s a struggle within Eleven, a conflict between her attachments and doing what she believes is right. Could she leave behind everything she’s created – her relationships and loved ones – to pursue that path?
Eleven and Kali approach the discussion with distinct backgrounds. According to Berthelsen, Eleven has some experience with family, even just having a mother, while Kali never did. Berthelsen believes Kali still secretly hopes her parents will appear.

For me, a key element, particularly in episode 5, was the character’s feeling of being abandoned. It seemed like she was still hoping for her parents to rescue her, and I think that’s what really sets her apart from Eleven. That’s just how I see it.
Berthelsen collaborated closely with Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven, for the latest season. He described their connection as very natural, similar to their work together in season two, saying they create authentic and genuine moments on screen.
Stranger Thing season 5 concludes on New Year’s Day.
