Stranger Things Star Breaks Silence on Divisive Finale & “Lost” Episode 9 (& Netflix Won’t Be Happy)

After ten seasons, the popular show Stranger Things concluded on New Year’s Eve. While it’s rare for any show to meet incredibly high expectations, many fans felt the final season was disappointing. The ending felt hurried and didn’t quite connect to the earlier seasons, falling short of the emotional impact the series had promised. This left many viewers feeling let down, in a similar way to how some felt about the final season of Game of Thrones.

And now, even stars of the series are speaking out about their feelings on the controversial final season. Matthew Modine, who played Papa, was asked on Instagram if he enjoyed the series finale. To that, and likely much to Netflix‘s chagrin, he said simply, “No.” And when asked if he believed the fan-spun conspiracy theory that there was a secret ninth episode out there that’s still to be aired, he stated, “Hoping so for the fans.”

Even The Actors Aren’t Happy With That Ending

Matthew Modine when asked if he liked the ‘STRANGER THINGS’ series finale:

“Nope”

Viewers quickly shared their reactions online, with one commenting that they appreciated the honesty. They noted that not all series finales are perfect, and artificial excitement doesn’t improve a flawed ending. A simple ‘no’ is more straightforward than a carefully worded, positive statement. They hoped the finale satisfied fans, but emphasized that actors are allowed to have their own opinions. Another viewer agreed, describing the finale as feeling like a corporate strategy session pretending to be an episode – overly cautious, drawn-out, and afraid of criticism. They also felt that a direct ‘no’ was the most truthful response.

The final season of the show was a disappointing departure from what made it special. It felt rushed, filled with confusing plot points, and relied too much on unnatural conversations. The season lost the themes of hope, friendship, and acceptance that defined earlier installments. Even worse, it created problems for the upcoming spin-off, Tales From ‘85, by introducing inconsistencies and more plot holes, potentially dooming that series before it even begins.
