*Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Stranger Things season 5 volume 2.*
Kali’s comeback in Stranger Things season 5 has brought a heartbreaking story and the unsettling news that the frightening experiences from Kali and Eleven’s childhoods are still continuing to affect them.
Once rescued from Dr. Kay’s lab by Eleven and Hopper, Kali explains the terrible things that happened there: Dr. Kay held many pregnant women prisoner and used Kali’s blood, hoping to revive the program originally run by Dr. Brenner.
Kali understands she needs to explain everything to Eleven and make an unbelievable request: for Eleven to sacrifice herself alongside Kali, finally breaking the repeating pattern.

It’s hard to figure out how to tell Eleven all of this. Her situation is so unique, and it’s tough to explain everything knowing that. She’s really upset and seems like she’s falling apart.
It’s a really tough situation – there’s a lot of love for Eleven, but also a difficult request being made of her, leading to a very challenging conversation.
After a shocking conversation at the end of the second volume, Eleven struggles to figure out the best course of action. The upcoming finale will likely reveal her choice and what happens as a result.
Fans first met Kali in season 2, and were shocked when she unexpectedly reappeared in season 5.
Berthelsen is enjoying the opportunity to explore Kali’s personality more fully. She explains that developing a character allows her to tap into a very human and vulnerable side, which is rewarding.
It’s unusual to have the chance to develop a character who starts as a carefully constructed image and transforms into someone much more vulnerable and authentic.
The Duffer Brothers, the creators of the show, initially presented this character arc to Sadie Sink when they asked her to reprise her role.
She remembered having a really good discussion with them about their vision for the project. She was particularly impressed and energized by how they approached the character, taking it in a fresh and unexpected direction.
Stranger Things season 5 concludes on New Year’s Day.
