Will Byers hasn’t had much luck with romance on Stranger Things, but the upcoming spin-off, Tales from ‘85, might change that. The show’s creator, Eric Robles, has suggested Will will explore a new relationship with a character named Nikki Baxter, marking his first on-screen romance.
Eric Robles teases new relationship for Will in Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85
According to the creator of Fanboy and Chum Chum, the upcoming animated Stranger Things spin-off will feature a new friendship between Will Byers (voiced by Ben Plessala) and Nikki Baxter (voiced by Odessa A’zion). He hinted that their connection might be romantic, comparing it to the relationships between Mike and Eleven, and Lucas and Max.
Eric Robles explained to GamesRadar+ that while discussing what Nikki could contribute, they noticed Will is struggling and doesn’t have anyone to confide in. Mike is currently focused on his relationship with Eleven, Lucas and Max are preoccupied with their own issues, and Dustin is busy seeking new experiences.
The producer explained that Will hadn’t found anyone he truly connected with. They loved the idea of introducing a character who would be completely accepting and supportive, someone who’d think his nickname, ‘Zombie Boy,’ was fantastic and encourage him to embrace it. This person would give him strength and provide a positive influence for growth and conversation.
Eric Robles explained that Nikki is key to helping Will gain the confidence to fight Vecna as the story progresses. He added, “Will really grew as a character, and we hope Nikki played a part in that development.”
In Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85, a story set between seasons 2 and 3, a new character named Nikki Baxter will be introduced. She’s a new student who quickly becomes friends with Will after standing up for him against a bully at school.
Spanning 10 episodes, the Stranger Things spin-off is on track to hit Netflix on April 23, 2026.
