The holidays are usually a time for fun and family, with people coming together to enjoy good food and celebrate the end of the year. Between parties and other commitments, many of us like to watch festive movies and TV shows – there are always great Thanksgiving sitcom episodes and classic Christmas films to enjoy. But in 2025, Netflix is changing things up with the final season of Stranger Things. Instead of releasing it all at once, the season will be released in three parts: the first around Thanksgiving, the second on Christmas, and the final episodes on New Year’s Eve.
With the show on pause, fans have plenty of time to guess who will survive and what the fate of Hawkins, Indiana will be. While the creators, the Duffer brothers, are known for keeping secrets, the newest trailer for Stranger Things Season 5 might offer a clue about Will Byers, potentially supporting a popular theory that he won’t die.
There’s Only One Goal in Stranger Things Season 5

As a huge fan, I’ve noticed that Stranger Things usually follows a pattern: they beat the monster, everyone tries to relax, and then another monster shows up! But honestly, Season 5 feels different right from the start. The town of Hawkins is already a total mess with this huge gate to the Upside Down open, and the government has locked everything down. Me and the rest of the gang – Mike and the others – we just know something’s really wrong. So we’re making a plan to go after the source of all this, Vecna. We don’t know where he is yet, but we’ve got ways of figuring it out, and that’s enough to get us started.
Okay, so the latest Stranger Things trailer just dropped, and it looks like they’re really gearing up for the final showdown with Vecna. We see Eleven really training hard to get her powers back on point, Nancy’s upgraded her weapon from a shotgun to a rifle, and Mike’s predictably putting himself in harm’s way to protect everyone. Poor Will Byers, though… he’s been dealing with so much ever since that first trip to the Upside Down, it’s easy to see why the show has kind of kept him on the sidelines lately. But the trailer throws a major curveball! That final shot of Vecna confronting Will… wow. Vecna needs his help again, and it strongly hints that one of the big fan theories about Will might actually be right. We don’t know what Vecna wants from him yet, but it’s definitely a game-changer.
Will Byers Could Be the Key to Defeating Vecna

Even though Will escaped the Upside Down a long time ago, he’s still linked to it. He can sense when danger is coming, which helps him alert his friends. But they won’t always be there to protect him, and many viewers think Will will eventually have to face challenges on his own. A common idea among fans is that Will actually has powers, he just hasn’t figured out how to use them yet. Another encounter with Vecna might be what he needs to unlock them, especially since the show still needs to give Will a crucial purpose as the story wraps up.
Most of the episode titles for Season 5 fit the storyline, but “The Sorcerer” feels a bit off. No one has really earned that title yet, though Will is a strong contender. Throughout the show’s Dungeons & Dragons scenes, he goes by “Will the Wise” and asks everyone to call him by his full name, William. Vecna even does this in the trailer, suggesting he recognizes Will’s potential and wants to manipulate him before he grows stronger. While it would be logical for Eleven to be the one to finish the story, given her power, it would be really compelling if Will ultimately brought everything full circle.
Stranger Things Season 5 starts streaming on Netflix on November 26.
