Talks about adding Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII to Street Fighter 6 began roughly three years ago, shortly after Street Fighter 6 was first released to positive reviews.
IGN reports that director Takayuki Nakayama and producer Shuhei Matsumoto revealed in an interview they have a friend in common who works at Final Fantasy.
Nakayama explained:
We have a friend who works at Square Enix and really likes Street Fighter 6. We started talking about ways we could work together, and the idea of featuring a character from one of their games came up.
Around the time the Final Fantasy 7 remake was popular, we noticed Tifa’s fighting style – she’s very skilled in martial arts. We felt she’d be a great fit for Street Fighter 6, and that’s how the idea naturally came about.
Next spring will see the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and fans can look forward to Tifa Lockhart becoming a playable character in Street Fighter 6 earlier that year. It’s a great combination of these two popular franchises.
Matsumoto also mentioned that Square Enix played a significant role in designing Tifa, and renowned character designer Tetsuya Nomura contributed to the process as well.
He said:
We carefully considered many details, such as how to realistically portray impacts like punches and kicks. The team at Square Enix, including Tetsuya Nomura from the Final Fantasy 7 project, reviewed everything. Once they approved it, the Capcom developers added it to the game.
When Tifa joins Street Fighter 6, she’ll have a special fighting style based on Materia, making her gameplay unique compared to other characters.
Remember, she’ll be part of the Year 4 Pass, alongside newcomers Yasmine, Arjun, and Bosch.
