Since the announcement earlier this month about a new challenge on Strictly Come Dancing, fans have been eagerly waiting to see what it would involve.
We’ve just seen the initial version of Instant Dance, and it was definitely a bit wild!
The competition began with all the couples in dressing gowns. Each couple then received an envelope telling them what kind of dance they would be performing. They heard a short clip of their song and were then allowed to pick out costumes from a selection of outfits.
The couples quickly changed behind the scenes, with a few strange occurrences – including Nikita Kuzmin enthusiastically professing his love for being on live television. They then moved to the stairs and had just ten seconds each to come up with a 40-second dance routine.
The first three couples to dance were Alex and Johannes, who performed a Rumba to “Show Me Heaven,” George and Alexis, who did a Tango to Prince’s “When Doves Cry,” and Lewis and Katya, who Jived to Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.”
Balvinder and Julian kicked off the performances with a dramatic Paso Doble, set to The Animals’s classic song “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.” Then, Karen and Carlos danced a lively Cha Cha Cha to The Four Seasons’ “Beggin’,” and Amber and Nikita finished the show with a vibrant Samba to Shakira’s “Whenever, Wherever.”
The studio audience seemed to be really enjoying themselves, and Claudia said everyone was getting goosebumps.
The judges clearly loved the challenge, with Anton Du Beke especially enthusiastic, saying he’d like to see it happen every week. He even noted that some of the celebrities performed better during the challenge than they had in their previous dances.
Following a quick discussion, Craig Revel Horwood revealed the judges’ scores: Karen and Carlos received 1 point, George and Alexis got 2, Alex and Johannes earned 3, and Amber and Nikita were awarded 4.
Shirley Ballas announced Lewis and Katya as the winners, awarding them 6 points. Balvinder and Julian came in second with 5 points.
Overall, the challenge was incredibly exciting, and many people watching at home shared their positive reactions on social media, with many hoping it will be brought back in the future.
One fan enthusiastically declared the “Instant Dance” a must-have for every season, calling it “iconic TV.” Another fan completely changed their mind, admitting they had a “BEST TIME” and now want it to continue.
Another viewer highlighted a funny moment when Claudia rushed behind the scenes with a pink dress, calling it “BAFTA-worthy” and praising the “absolute chaos” of Instant Dance. They said they loved it.
Viewers had mixed reactions to the new “instant dance” segment on #StrictlyComeDancing. One person wasn’t sure if it was a good idea or completely chaotic, while another praised it, saying it offered a fun peek behind the scenes, pushed everyone to try new things, and created a sense of unpredictable excitement.
When the competition was first revealed, lead judge Shirley Ballas said it could completely transform things for the participating couples, pushing them beyond anything they’d experienced before.
She explained that this year’s competition is particularly tough, with exceptionally high standards and very close contenders. While details like the dances, costumes, and music will be a surprise until the event, she’s confident it will be a lot of fun and expressed her excitement.
The recent challenge didn’t completely shake things up, but it did cause some changes in the rankings. Amber now leads with 4 points after achieving a perfect score of 40 on her first dance. Lewis moved into second place, surpassing Karen, who also earned a perfect 40 earlier in the show.
Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One and iPlayer on Saturday 6th December.
