Strictly’s Amber Davies responds to critics: ‘Being confident does not mean you’re stuck up’

Since joining Strictly Come Dancing, Amber Davies has received a lot of criticism from viewers, and she’s now speaking out about it.

The actress joined the show’s line-up with very short notice, stepping in for Dani Dyer only a day before the first live performance. Dyer had to withdraw from the competition after fracturing her ankle.

Since winning Love Island, Ekin-Su Davies has built a successful career, appearing in popular West End musicals like 9 to 5, Back to the Future, and most recently, The Great Gatsby.

Despite her strong qualifications, Davies says she’s been receiving a constant stream of abuse, and it’s actually gotten worse in the past few weeks.

Ultimately, I believe love is stronger than hate. I’m really happy we had a chance this weekend to remind everyone to simply be kind – it’s not worth getting overly serious about.

During Saturday’s show, Nikita Kuzmin addressed the negative messages directed at his partner, Davies. He told Davies that despite receiving hateful comments since joining the show and especially this week, Davies consistently came to training with a positive attitude and ignored the negativity.

Honestly, watching this unfold is just…heartbreakingly sweet. It’s this incredibly selfless dynamic where one person is constantly showering the other with affection – even little things like a ginger shot to perk them up. But it goes so much deeper than that. It’s about consistently prioritizing the other person’s well-being, being endlessly kind and caring, and genuinely putting their needs before your own. It’s a beautifully gentle portrayal of someone who is, simply put, a lovely and incredibly considerate soul.

I just want to say to everyone watching, please be kind. It doesn’t cost anything, and Amber doesn’t deserve any negativity. She deserves love, because I wouldn’t be where I am today, and this show wouldn’t be as great without her.

It’s frustrating to even have to say this in 2025, but a woman being driven, confident, and hardworking doesn’t make her arrogant or unlikeable. I want to challenge that idea, because it shouldn’t even be a perception. I’ve often been told people simply don’t like me, and I believe it’s because they don’t want to like me for being ambitious.

Ultimately, I grew up in a small town in North Wales, and I’ve worked incredibly hard because I’m passionate about my work. I want to emphasize that life is short, so pursue your ambitions and cherish what matters to you. Don’t hold back or downplay your own goals to make others feel better – we should all live life on our own terms.

Strictly Come Dancing concludes on Saturday 20th December at 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
