If Carlos Gu and his partner Karen Carney win this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, he would make history as the first Asian man to win the show’s coveted Glitterball trophy.
The dancer, who began the program in 2022, would be thrilled to win, having already charmed both his celebrity dance partners and viewers across the country. Just thinking about winning actually makes him quite emotional.
Before Saturday night’s performance, a reporter asked the dancer what it would mean for representation if he won, becoming both the first openly gay and first Asian man to do so. The dancer became overwhelmed with emotion and couldn’t respond.
For the past three months, he and Karen Carney have consistently impressed viewers with their performances. When he was unable to perform, Carney filled in and enthusiastically praised his talent, as she frequently does.

Carney playfully admitted she was happy to see him upset, explaining that ‘Strictly’ is about more than just the dancing itself.
During their semi-final performance last weekend, both Carney and Gu were visibly moved while dancing a waltz to Whitney Houston’s “One Moment in Time.”
The professional dancer became emotional during the performance, and Karen comforted him. They both cried even harder after their dance finished.
Describing the experience, Karen said she noticed him unsteady and felt a wonderful sense of joy. She also expressed her gratitude to the costume department, saying they had made her feel beautiful.
Carlos, overcome with emotion, explained that he wanted to share this dance as a celebration of their relationship and everything they’d been through together.
Carlos was overcome with emotion after receiving a score of 39 from the judges, calling it “unbelievable.” The pair is currently leading the competition with a total of 78 points, having also earned 39 points for their previous performance.
Strictly Come Dancing concludes on Saturday 20th December at 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
