I’m always fascinated by the discussions comic book fans have about who the strongest superhero really is. It’s amazing to see these legendary characters come to life on screen, showing off incredible abilities! Some are just brute force – able to level cities with a single punch. But others are even more impressive, wielding powers of the mind that can bend reality and mess with your head. While a few have vulnerabilities, honestly, most of them seem unstoppable to me. It’s just incredible to watch!
We created this list by concentrating on superheroes, leaving out supervillains like Ikaris from Eternals and Galactus. Ranking heroes is always tricky and open to discussion – everyone has their own opinion! But based on our assessment, here are the most powerful superheroes we’ve seen in movies.
‘The Sentry’

Disney
Lewis Pullman debuted as The Sentry in the recent Thunderbolts movie, and he’s a pretty complex character. He struggles with mental health and also contains a supervillain personality called The Void. When provoked, The Void takes over and becomes the film’s biggest danger. However, ultimately, The Sentry is a hero and joins the team by the end of the movie.
Before all that, Sentry quickly defeats the Thunderbolts and is presented as the single hero taking the place of the entire Avengers team—that’s how incredibly powerful he is. He has amazing strength, speed, can fly, and is nearly indestructible. While he shares similarities with Superman, the MCU version has even more abilities, adding psychic powers to his already impressive physical traits. However, Sentry ranks lower on this list because we haven’t yet seen the full extent of his powers on screen, as he’s still learning to control them as a hero.
‘Hancock’

Sony Pictures Releasing
While most superhero films come from Marvel or DC, Hancock presents a unique case. The movie centers on a flawed hero—a reckless alcoholic with amnesia—who often causes trouble instead of preventing it. Hancock, played by Will Smith, is incredibly powerful: he’s virtually indestructible, can fly at amazing speeds, possesses immense strength and stamina, and heals rapidly from any injury.
Hancock possesses extraordinary abilities because he’s actually a god. His one vulnerability is the presence of other gods, who can strip him of his powers and make him human. By the end of the movie, he still has his powers, solidifying his place as one of the most powerful superheroes ever shown on film.
‘Hulk’

Universal Pictures
When Bruce Banner is exposed to gamma radiation, he transforms into the Hulk, a powerful green creature. In movies, the Hulk is usually portrayed as an incredibly strong and angry force. His immense strength often causes widespread destruction and seems limitless, making him one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He can jump amazing distances and easily destroy buildings, even just by clapping. He’s also nearly indestructible, able to withstand bullets and most dangerous attacks. And who could forget when he defeated Loki?
As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the Hulk. It’s wild to think about how many different actors have played him – from Eric Bana in the first Hulk movie to Edward Norton in The Incredible Hulk. Now, Mark Ruffalo really is the Hulk for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he’s become such a crucial part of the Avengers. He’s the powerhouse, the one who instantly makes you feel like the team has a real shot in any fight. Honestly, thinking back over everything I’ve seen, only one other superhero seems able to go toe-to-toe with Bruce Banner when he Hulks out.
‘Thor’

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
I’m a huge Thor fan, and it’s easy to see why he’s so popular! Chris Hemsworth really nailed the role of this Norse god of thunder. He’s definitely one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What’s really cool is his hammer, Mjölnir – it’s not just a weapon, it actually makes him even more powerful. And get this – as a god, Thor’s basically lived forever! He’s immortal, having been around for thousands of years. While he can be hurt, it would take someone incredibly powerful to actually take him down. His godly powers give him unbelievable strength, endurance, and he’s super durable, too.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve always thought Thor is uniquely capable of going toe-to-toe with the Hulk – even before he gets his lightning powers! Once he’s charged up, he’s practically unstoppable. Remember in Thor: Ragnarok? He was totally winning against Hulk if the Grandmaster hadn’t interfered. And then in Avengers: Infinity War, his arrival really shifted the momentum of the battle, even though they ultimately lost. Honestly, if he’d just aimed for Thanos’ head, things might have been very different!
‘Captain Marvel’

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Right before Nick Fury turns to dust in Avengers: Infinity War, he desperately sends a message for help to Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). Carol Danvers, who gained incredible powers after an accident involving the Tesseract, is a powerful human-Kree hybrid and the universe’s last hope.
Captain Marvel is incredibly strong, fast, and resilient, possessing superhuman abilities. She can absorb and control energy, using it to unleash powerful blasts or boost her own powers. Initially, she was positioned as the Avengers’ hidden ace, their most powerful member. However, while the first Captain Marvel movie did very well, the sequel unfortunately became one of Marvel’s biggest box-office disappointments.
‘Shazam’

Warner Bros. Pictures
I’ve always been fascinated by Shazam! He’s not your typical superhero – he’s a kid who magically transforms into a powerful adult when he says ‘Shazam!’ It’s amazing because he doesn’t just get powers, he gains the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, incredible stamina from Atlas, the power of Zeus himself, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury! It’s like he’s a Superman with a switch – he can turn his godly abilities on and off whenever he needs them. It’s so cool seeing both Asher Angel and Zachary Levi bring him to life on screen.
While Shazam’s magical abilities could potentially give him an advantage over Superman – who is vulnerable to magic – Superman is generally a more skilled and mature fighter. Shazam, being essentially a child with immense power, sometimes makes impulsive decisions. This lack of maturity is the main reason he’s considered slightly more powerful overall, even though their abilities are fairly equal.
Superman

Warner Bros.
Faster than a bullet and stronger than a train, it’s Superman! He’s one of the most recognizable superheroes ever created. Originally from the planet Krypton, Superman came to Earth and gained incredible powers from our sun. He’s unbelievably strong – stronger than almost any other superhero you’ll find on screen. He can fly, shoot lasers from his eyes, see through things with X-ray vision, and hear sounds from miles away. He’s even so fast he could theoretically reverse time! In the movie Justice League, he proved his strength by defeating even powerful heroes like the Flash and Wonder Woman.
Superman is famously nearly indestructible, even his eyes can stop bullets! It often makes you wonder if there’s anything he can’t do. But that’s actually been a challenge for the character. Critics point out that Superman’s invulnerability – except for Kryptonite and magic – and his vast powers can make him feel less relatable. Over the years, Superman has been a popular figure in many films and series, portrayed by actors like Christopher Reeve, Henry Cavill, and David Corenswet.
‘Professor X’

20th Century Fox
Charles Xavier, better known as Professor X, leads and guides the X-Men. He’s different from many superheroes because his strength comes from his mind, not his physical abilities. Professor X is a remarkably powerful telepath – he can read thoughts, memories, and feelings. But his abilities go far beyond that; he could actually control someone’s mind, change their thoughts, or even create mental illusions. Using a device called Cerebro, he can amplify his powers and reach every mind on Earth. He’s so powerful, in fact, that in the 2017 movie Logan, his deteriorating mental state is considered a dangerous weapon.
Professor X first appeared on screen in the X-Men movies starring Patrick Stewart. Stewart later made a brief appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, bringing the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. James McAvoy later portrayed a younger version of Professor X in a series of prequel films. No matter which actor plays him, Professor X remains one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel universe.
‘Jean Grey’

20th Century Fox
Jean Grey is considered more powerful than Professor X. Both characters appear in the X-Men films – Famke Janssen played Jean in the original trilogy, while Sophie Turner took on the role in the prequel movies. Initially, Jean is presented as a strong telepath, but not as powerful as Professor X. However, the films gradually show that Jean’s mental abilities are far greater than they first appear, and have been held back by Professor X. Their confrontation in X-Men: The Last Stand demonstrates just how immense her power truly is.
Jean possesses incredibly strong telekinetic and telepathic powers, exceeding even those of Professor X, and can be incredibly dangerous when she uses them. When she connects with the Phoenix Force, she becomes a virtually unstoppable cosmic power, one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe – though not entirely without limits.
‘Scarlet Witch’

Walt Disney Studios
We previously said there would be no villains, and that’s still largely true. For most of her story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) is a hero and an Avenger. She grows into one of the MCU’s most powerful characters, becoming a skilled sorceress who can use chaos magic. This allows her to change reality, creating illusions and controlling time and space. She also has psychic abilities, letting her shoot energy blasts, move objects with her mind, read thoughts, and even levitate.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness really showcases how incredibly powerful Scarlet Witch is, transforming her into a terrifying and seemingly invincible villain. Not even Doctor Strange or Professor X are strong enough to defeat her. Ultimately, it appears only Scarlet Witch can stop herself.
