Penny’s role is being filled by a new character in the spin-off series, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, which also has ties to The Big Bang Theory. While Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage have kept the popular franchise alive after the original series ended in 2017, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe represents a fresh, modern direction for the universe of The Big Bang Theory.
After The Big Bang Theory concluded in 2019, discussions about continuing the show began right away. It wasn’t because people had stopped watching – in fact, The Big Bang Theory was still very popular with viewers and CBS wanted more episodes. However, Jim Parsons’ choice to leave meant the show couldn’t continue. Now, creator Chuck Lorre is revisiting this world with Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. While none of the original main characters will be series regulars, Lauren Lapkus’ character, Denise, feels like a natural successor to Penny.
Fans noticed similarities between Denise and Penny from The Big Bang Theory, mainly because of how their love stories unfolded. Both women are strong, self-assured characters who end up with men who struggle socially – Stuart and Leonard. What really highlights the connection, though, is that Denise, like Penny, doesn’t have a last name.
How Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Can Make Up For The Big Bang Theory’s Penny Crimes

Early seasons of The Big Bang Theory often portrayed Penny in a problematic way. She faced constant judgment and objectification from the male characters, especially Sheldon, and even her mother’s visits highlighted this. The show’s creators later acknowledged these issues, though things did improve over time. However, the storyline involving Penny’s pregnancy felt like it diminished her control over her own life. Now, with Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, there’s an opportunity to address these past mistakes by handling the character of Denise in a more thoughtful way.
Unlike Kaley Cuoco’s character, Denise didn’t face the same old-fashioned stereotypes, mostly because the show’s humor had already changed by the time she appeared on The Big Bang Theory. Now, as she joins Stuart Fails to Save the Universe as a main character, the writers have the opportunity to develop her personality and story from the beginning, instead of waiting to give her a more significant role later on. While her relationship with Stuart will be important, Denise shouldn’t be defined only by being his love interest.
Good news for fans! The new series, Stuart Saves the Universe, is coming out later this year. But unlike previous The Big Bang Theory spin-offs, this one will be available to stream on HBO Max instead of traditional television.
