Subnautica 2 Delayed by Krafton

In 2025, Subnautica 2 was one of the most eagerly awaited survival games, but a recent announcement revealed that it’s been delayed from its initial release date in 2025 to 2026. Although no exact date has been given yet, the latest update suggests that it will now come out in 2026 instead. This news comes as we were getting ready for the early access launch of Subnautica 2 and follows the departure of the original creators of Subnautica from the development team.

As a die-hard gamer, I’ve been eagerly anticipating my next deep-sea adventure in the highly anticipated sequel to Subnautica – Subnautica 2. It’s the follow-up that fans like me have been waiting for! However, things took an unexpected turn when there were reports of disputes regarding its launch between the co-founders of Unknown Worlds, Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire, and publisher Krafton. Sadly, these disagreements led to the founders being let go, which has left many of us in a state of confusion. To make matters more puzzling, Cleveland hinted that Subnautica 2 was almost ready for an early release, but here we are, still waiting.

According to a report from Bloomberg, it was mentioned that the development team of Unknown Worlds stood to receive a $250 million bonus if their game ‘Subnautica 2’ met specific revenue goals. This bonus was to be divided among the employees. Despite being the second most anticipated game on Steam, the delay in its release undoubtedly presents a significant hurdle.

It’s certainly disheartening for those eagerly anticipating Subnautica 2. Originally slated for early access with player input shaping the development process, it now appears that Unknown Worlds may have to postpone its launch due to Krafton’s preference for a full game release on day one. This could suggest that there might be some differences in vision between the founders of Unknown Worlds and Krafton, leading to the delay.
