With ongoing questions about the development of Subnautica 2, and recent updates from Ted Gill, it’s refreshing to see a focus on the game itself. Unknown Worlds Entertainment has started a new series called “Dive into the Legacy” which showcases the community and its members. The first episode features Arytom, who is now a level designer working on the sequel.
After enjoying the original game, he volunteered to be a playtester for Subnautica: Below Zero. This meant playing the game and finding interesting things, even glitches like objects passing through surfaces or unexpectedly catching fire. He remembers it being a very collaborative experience, working closely with the developers.
This company was built with input from its community, and players actively helped shape the development of games like Below Zero. Subnautica was a huge success, and that success was thanks to listening to the community.
Artyom, a level designer for Subnautica 2, recalls feeling a strong sense of wonder while exploring areas like the Mushroom Forest and Grand Reef in the original Subnautica. When designing the sequel, he focused on recreating those feelings. He asked himself: ‘When I build these new environments, do they still evoke that same awe and curiosity about what lies ahead?’
I realize I’m repeating myself, but it feels right. It’s like having a little voice inside encouraging me, telling me I’m on the right track.
He also shared some exciting news about the upcoming sequel: the aliens will play a much bigger role. He promised players will discover more about them, learn their secrets, and delve deeper into their world than they ever imagined. He’s eager for fans to experience it, and the recently revealed footage suggests it will be genuinely frightening, particularly if an ally is captured.
Subnautica 2 will be available in early access on Xbox Series X/S and PC starting this May. We’ll share details about how much content will be included at launch and future plans soon, so keep an eye out for more news!
