Since the start of the 2020 pandemic, it seems like the world has faced a continuous stream of challenges.
Specifically in the tech industry, a lack of semiconductors and taxes on imports have affected products such as gaming consoles.
The recent surge in artificial intelligence is significantly impacting DRAM prices. Reports indicate that OpenAI is purchasing a substantial 40% of the global DRAM supply to operate its data centers.
As a PlayStation fan, I’m relieved to hear Sony seems prepared and we probably won’t see PS5 prices jump anytime soon because they’ve been smart about stocking up on parts. But just to give you an idea of how crazy the component market is right now, Tom’s Hardware is reporting that a single 64GB stick of DDR5 RAM is costing almost $600! It’s wild out there.
As the website notes, this price is $200 higher than the Black Friday price of the PS5 Slim and only $50 less expensive than the more powerful PS5 Pro.
It’s surprising how quickly DRAM prices have jumped – nearly doubling in just three months. This recent increase seems to have taken everyone off guard, except for Sony.
Reports suggest Microsoft is planning another price increase for the Xbox Series X|S. This is reportedly due to a lack of preparation and not having enough consoles in stock beforehand.
The main worry is that prices will stay elevated in 2026, as Sony can only maintain current protection for the PS5 for a limited time.
If you’re considering a new gaming console, now’s the perfect time to check out the Black Friday sales. You likely won’t find these systems at lower prices again anytime soon.
