Suni Lee is balancing out the hate.
Okay, so I’ve been following this story, and honestly, it breaks my heart. The incredible Olympic gymnast who walked the Victoria’s Secret runway recently has been getting a lot of negativity online, and she just posted a really raw and honest video asking people to be kinder. It’s tough enough putting yourself out there like that, and she’s clearly hurt by the criticism. It’s a good reminder that what we post online has real impact, and choosing kindness is *always* the better option.
In an October 18th TikTok, she lip-synced to Ariana Grande’s song “Successful,” singing along to the lyrics, “Yeah, it feels so good to be so young and have this fun and be successful, yeah / I’m so successful, yeah.”
Further driving her point home Suni captioned the clip, “Can u guys stop bullying me.”
The 22-year-old also liked and responded to several encouraging comments on the video. This included a message from Ming Lee Simmons asking, “Who’s bullying you?! I won’t allow it,” and a fan who pointed out, “You were on the runway while they were stuck at home.”
The Olympic gold medalist addressed a question about online bullying related to her height. Someone asked why people were making fun of her, and added, “You can’t control that, man.” Suni simply replied, “Seriously.”
The athlete had already shared her feelings about being a part of the famous fashion show.
She described walking in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show as a surreal experience that pushed her boundaries. ‘It was completely outside of my comfort zone, but that’s precisely why I wanted to do it,’ she told Marie Claire in a recent interview.
Suni shared that when she was growing up, she rarely saw girls who looked like her in competitive settings. Now, as an Olympian who has worked incredibly hard to reach her goals, she feels a sense of empowerment. She wants young girls to understand they don’t need to conform to stereotypes – they can pursue ambitious dreams like winning an Olympic medal while still embracing who they are as women.
She shared that she hadn’t known very far in advance she’d be walking in the Victoria’s Secret show, but it actually worked out for the best.
“I didn’t really have time to prepare, and looking back, that was a good thing,” Suni explained. “It let me be completely myself here, without pretending to be anyone else.”
She wasn’t the only celebrity on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway this year. Find out who else walked the show by continuing to read…
