The Super Mario Bros. Movie reached a major milestone, becoming the first film of 2026 to earn over $1 billion worldwide.
The new movie, released on April 1st, has become a major commercial success even though critics didn’t like it. It’s now part of a select group of films to reach this level of box office revenue, just like the original.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $1.36 billion in 2023, making it the year’s second-highest-grossing film after Barbie. It currently ranks as the 20th highest-grossing movie of all time.

As the year continues, several other movies have the potential to earn over $1 billion. One of them is Michael, the recently released biopic about the King of Pop, which has already made $888 million worldwide.
Movies like Toy Story 5, the new Spider-Man and Avengers films, and Christopher Nolan’s upcoming The Odyssey are also aiming for big box office numbers. Following Oppenheimer’s near-$1 billion success, The Odyssey is expected to potentially reach that same milestone.
Currently, the top three films expected to perform well at the 2026 global box office, following the leaders, are Project Hail Mary with $680 million, The Devil Wears Prada 2 with $663 million, and the Chinese film Pegasus 3 with $653 million.
I’ve been so impressed with how well some recent movies have done! Obsession and Backrooms, both horror films, have really blown up, bringing in $224 million and $212 million respectively. What’s even cooler is that they didn’t cost a lot to make, so those numbers are seriously amazing and I think they’ll keep climbing!
The Super Mario Galaxy movie begins with Mario and his brother Luigi, along with their friends, venturing into space on a mission to rescue Princess Rosalina from the villainous Bowser and his son, Bowser Jr.
As a huge fan of the first movie, I was thrilled to hear that Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key were all back to voice their characters! And the cast got even better with some fantastic new additions – Benny Safdie, Donald Glover, and Brie Larson all joined the team, which I think is a brilliant move.
