The recent Superman movie takes place mostly on Earth, with a quick trip to another dimension created by Lex Luthor. While the film focuses on our planet, it still hints at the wider DC Universe and Superman’s origins. We see brief images of Krypton, his home planet, but they’re very short. The repeating message from his parents, shown in the Fortress of Solitude and later worldwide, features a bright, white room that’s likely on Krypton, but it doesn’t give us a good look at the planet itself.
Things are set to change next summer with the release of DC Studios’ second film, Supergirl. While the movie could continue the story started in Superman and become part of the larger DC Universe, it will also explore new territory – specifically, the planet Krypton. Unlike Superman, who was a baby when he left Krypton and has no memories of it, Kara Zor-El (played by Milly Alcock) was older when the planet was destroyed, and this is a central part of her story.
Supergirl Will Finally Take the DCU To Krypton
Director Craig Gillespie recently shared his excitement about showing Krypton, the home planet of Superman and Supergirl, in the upcoming Supergirl trailer. He noted that even James Gunn didn’t feature Krypton in his first DC Universe film.
What’s really interesting about this character is that she remained on Krypton, unlike Superman who escaped as a baby. This created a completely different life path for her, deeply impacting who she is, her experiences, and the trauma she carries. I don’t want to reveal too much, but the film does show Krypton.
I was really interested to hear how quickly the Supergirl script grabbed James Gunn’s attention. He said that Ana Nogueira – she’s got a lot of other DC stuff coming up too – had him hooked pretty fast, and it became clear right away that this was a project he really wanted to make. It’s cool to hear how strong the script was from the start!
The first two scenes really showcase the entire range of the film. They were complete opposites, placed right after each other, and the stark contrast in tone immediately grabbed my attention – that’s when I knew I wanted to be involved.
For those who enjoyed Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the filmmakers paid special attention to one memorable detail: “The Space Bus.” This crowded, intergalactic vehicle, filled with strange aliens, was already hinted at in the trailer, assuring fans that the movie is a faithful adaptation of the critically acclaimed comic book.
Supergirl flies into theaters on June 26, 2026.
