Supergirl Director and Star Breakdown the DCU’s New Hero

By presenting a Kryptonian hero with a personality very unlike Superman, DC is truly starting to forge a new direction for its superhero stories with a fresh perspective.

Director Craig Gillespie described the upcoming film as a story about an anti-hero. He explained that the script, written by Ana Nogueira, presented a character with a lot of personal struggles, a departure from Superman’s typically optimistic outlook. Gillespie was particularly pleased with Millie’s casting, as she brought the necessary complexity and humanity to the role, allowing audiences to connect with and sympathize with a tough but flawed character. He felt fortunate that Millie was already attached to the project.

According to Alcock, the character is refreshingly authentic, even if a bit chaotic, and doesn’t strive to be a traditional hero. She finds this admirable, noting that while Clark Kent hides his true self, Kara Danvers refuses to do so.

James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, also spoke highly of the film, pointing out that Supergirl is a departure from director James Gillespie’s previous work, like I, Tonya and Cruella. He also believes it will demonstrate the overall vision for the DC Universe, showing that future movies will feature unique characters and stories.
