Supergirl First Trailer Has Comic-Accurate Shots and New DCU Additions

James Gunn and Peter Safran had a lot riding on the launch of the new DC Universe, and the huge success of Superman showed they were on the right track. The film was praised for its heartfelt story and became a major box office hit, even though many international audiences were starting to feel tired of superhero movies. This success, however, immediately put more pressure on the next film, Supergirl. While Superman is a well-known hero, Supergirl doesn’t have the same level of recognition. The big question heading into 2026 was whether DC Studios could keep the momentum going with a character who doesn’t have the same built-in popularity as Clark Kent. Luckily, the early marketing for Supergirl suggests the franchise is in good hands.

DC Studios has finally released the full trailer for the upcoming Supergirl movie, following a week of short teasers. The trailer reveals the film will closely follow the popular comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.

The video shows a strong commitment to the original comic book art, with some scenes looking almost exactly like panels from the source material. The story centers on Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) and her journey for revenge, which remains a key part of this new version. While the main storyline is similar to the 2021 comic series, the trailer also suggests important changes to better connect this story with the larger DC Universe.

The Supergirl Trailer Gives Us the Best Look Yet at Jason Momoa’s Lobo

One of the biggest changes the show Supergirl made from the original comics is the addition of Lobo, played by Jason Momoa. Fans have long said Momoa was perfect for the role of this intergalactic bounty hunter, and he’s openly expressed his own interest in playing him for years. The trailer confirms he’s a great fit, looking exactly like the comic book version with his pale skin and signature vest. Bringing in a popular character like Lobo gives Momoa a strong role and reinforces the idea that Supergirl exists within a larger, connected universe, much like the world of Superman. The original Woman of Tomorrow comic focuses mostly on new characters, so Lobo’s appearance reminds viewers that this story is part of a bigger, shared galaxy with familiar faces.

The trailer shows that Supergirl will feel very different from the previous Superman movie. While Superman was known for being hopeful and bright, Supergirl has a much more serious and realistic tone. The film portrays Kara not just as a female Superman, but as someone deeply affected by the loss of her home world, giving her a more cynical outlook. It’s a clever move for DC Studios to release Supergirl as their second film, demonstrating that the new DC Universe can explore a broad range of styles and genres after delivering a traditional superhero story.

Supergirl is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 26, 2026.
