Supergirl Teases Major Brainiac Connection Ahead of Superman: Man of Tomorrow

The upcoming DC Studios film, Supergirl, is almost here, and the marketing campaign is now in full swing. Along with the typical release of trailers and TV spots, DC and Warner Bros. are partnering with major brands to launch a wide range of promotional tie-ins.

DC is promoting Supergirl again, this time using her dog, Krypto, in ads with companies like Milk-Bone and Kentucky Fried Chicken. They’re now partnering with Ulta Beauty, focusing on the ‘Girl’ part of Supergirl’s name. If you look closely at what actress Milly Alcock is wearing in the ad, you’ll notice a subtle detail that hints at important story points, and even sets the stage for the upcoming Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow.

New Supergirl Ad Teases Brainiac’s DCU Backstory

In the recent Ulta Beauty commercial featuring Supergirl’s Milly Alcock, she’s wearing a t-shirt that says “Kandor City.” This is a significant detail because Kandor was the name of Supergirl’s home city on the planet Krypton. While Krypton was destroyed, Kandor survived—but not unscathed. It was captured by Brainiac, a super-intelligent android who collects samples of species from across the galaxy, hoping to build a complete record of all life. However, Brainiac often destroys the civilizations he collects from, believing it makes his samples and the knowledge they hold even more valuable.

Both Supergirl and Brainiac have had major changes to their backstories in DC Comics, but the most well-known now is their connection to each other. A story in the early 2000s, Superman: Birthright, revealed that Brainiac destroyed the city of Kandor by shrinking it and adding it to his collection. With Milly Alcock wearing a shirt referencing “Kandor City,” it’s clear the new movie will use this version of the story.

Kandor Could Be Key To Man of Tomorrow‘s Story

The recent news about Kandor City doesn’t mean the upcoming Supergirl movie won’t also draw inspiration from the classic “Earth-One” stories. In those tales, Kara’s home city was “Argo City,” which her father, Zor-El, protected with a shield when Krypton exploded. Argo City drifted in space for years before Kara was sent to Earth, escaping a deadly fate. The Supergirl movie could blend these ideas – perhaps Kandor survives Krypton’s destruction, only to be discovered by Brainiac, who is searching for the last remaining piece of Kryptonian civilization.

James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, might center around a key storyline involving Brainiac. Rumors suggest the film will draw inspiration from the 2008 Superman: Brainiac comic, where Brainiac steals the city of Kandor – and now threatens to do the same to Earth. The story could bring Superman and Supergirl together to protect the planet, and reveal surprising secrets about both of their families. Within the new DC Universe, Man of Tomorrow could be a major event that combines the Superman and Supergirl storylines, with Supergirl fighting not for revenge, but to rescue her people – including her parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze.
