Supergirl Trailer Explained: 8 Story Reveals, DC Characters & Easter Eggs

James Gunn is currently leading the direction of the DC Universe. The first project, Creature Commandos, feels like a follow-up to Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, featuring some returning characters alongside a host of new and frightening ones. Superman is where Gunn really gets to showcase his vision, essentially building an entire universe with Superman as its central figure. While Superman has help from the Justice League and his dog, Krypto, he likely would have appreciated having his cousin, Supergirl, by his side when battling Lex Luthor.

The movie Superman doesn’t delve deeply into Kara’s personality, simply stating she enjoys partying off-world. This is likely intentional, as the film knows the main focus of her story will be in Supergirl, which is Craig Gillespie’s first project for the DC Universe. Now, with the film slated for release in July 2026, DC Studios has released its initial trailer. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect, including plot points, DC characters, and hidden details.

8) Superman Is Still Doing His Thing

The trailer for Supergirl begins with Krypto, Kara’s dog, waking up while she’s still asleep. He then proceeds to urinate on a newspaper. This isn’t just any newspaper, though – it’s the Daily Planet, featuring a story about Superman recently saving a town from a nuclear meltdown, and a smaller mention of Kara rescuing a cat. It’s good to see Superman is still being a hero after briefly losing public support.

7) Krypton on Its Last Legs

I’ve noticed Kara isn’t jumping into the superhero thing with quite as much enthusiasm as you’d expect, and I think it’s because she’s still processing the loss of her home planet. The trailer showed glimpses of Krypton, including a city protected by some kind of shield. Knowing the comics, I’m a little worried that Brainiac might have been involved in Krypton’s destruction – he’s known for collecting cities, and Kandor was a major one. It makes me wonder if we’ll see him show up in Supergirl as a result.

6) Supergirl’s Parents

Okay, so Krypton actually looks surprisingly calm when it’s not being destroyed! The trailer shows what looks like a ceremony honoring someone, and we finally get to see Kara’s parents – David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham are playing them, which is awesome. I’m really curious to see if their views on things are similar to what Jor-El’s hologram talked about in the Superman movie – will they have the same kind of beliefs?

5) Ruthye Marye Knoll

Kara might not seem approachable at first, but she quickly connects with Ruthye Marye Knoll, a character who’s central to the comic book Superman: Woman of Tomorrow – the inspiration for the movie. In the comic, Ruthye embarks on a galactic journey seeking revenge for her father’s death. The film seems to be hinting at a similar storyline for her, as she’s shown carrying a weapon, though revenge isn’t her sole motivation.

4) Krem of the Yellow Hills

In Woman of Tomorrow, Ruthye is pursuing Krem of the Yellow Hills, who is also the primary villain in Supergirl. He makes a brief but striking appearance in the trailer, staring directly at the audience right after the title card. However, the live-action version of Krem looks quite different from how he’s depicted in the comics – he’s traded his red hair and bare chest for a shaved head and full armor.

3) Krypto’s Bad Day

The trailer suggests Krypto will play a significant role in Supergirl. However, that might be misleading, as he’s only shown for a short time in Woman of Tomorrow because of an injury. Given how rough he looks in the trailer, he’ll likely be out of action for much of the film. Hopefully, he’ll recover and be back to normal by Man of Tomorrow.

2) Lobo

Kara and Ruthye will face more than just Krem as enemies on their journey. The trailer also features Lobo, the famous DC bounty hunter played by Jason Momoa, making a quick appearance as he walks through flames. While the trailer shows him collecting energy, most fans believe he’s either tracking down Kara or Ruthye.

1) Supergirl Suit

The first trailer for Supergirl follows the classic comic book movie formula, ending with the heroine in costume battling villains. Her suit is a new design compared to the one seen in Superman, hinting that Kara is developing into a fully-fledged superhero. Or, it could simply be a costume change – comic book characters are known for switching up their appearances in movies, sometimes without a clear reason.

Supergirl hits theaters on June 26, 2026.
