The much-awaited DC Universe movie titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” has reached a major achievement, as confirmed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn on Threads. In response to a fan’s question about whether filming had finished, he simply replied, “Yes it has.” This signifies that the project, featuring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, moves into the crucial post-production stage. With a theatrical release scheduled for June 2026, the creative team now has more than a year to carefully design visual effects, sound, and final edits, aiming to meet the lofty expectations surrounding this fresh rendition of the legendary Kryptonian heroine.
Back in January 2024, my excitement for seeing Supergirl on the big screen solidified when it was announced that Olivia Alcock had been cast as Kara Zor-El. Even before broader auditions started, James Gunn, then co-head of DC Studios, had already envisioned her in this role. Filming for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” kicked off in January 2025, traversing various locations worldwide, including London’s Leavesden Studios, Scotland, and Iceland, before concluding in May 2025. The film is being directed by Craig Gillespie, renowned for his work on character-driven films like “I, Tonya” and “Cruella.” The screenplay is written by Ana Nogueira, who has been praised by Gunn for crafting a script that surpassed even his high expectations. This talented team is responsible for adapting the Eisner Award-nominated 2021-2022 comic book limited series, penned by Tom King with art by Bilquis Evely.
This upcoming film draws heavily from the comic book “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” by King & Evely, which offers a unique take on Supergirl that deviates from typical optimistic portrayals. In this story, Kara Zor-El, after years of loss and Superman’s constant presence in her life, struggles to find her purpose. On her 21st birthday, she finds herself on a planet orbiting a red sun. Here, she meets Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young alien girl seeking revenge for her father’s murder at the hands of Krem of the Yellow Hills. This encounter kickstarts an intense and emotionally charged interstellar journey with Supergirl, Ruthye, and Krypto the Superdog. The series is praised for its adult themes, its innovative mix of sci-fi and space-western elements, and its deep examination of trauma, grief, justice, and what it truly means to be a hero in a harsh universe.
A Different Kind of Kryptonian for a New DC Universe
In a nutshell, James Gunn has emphasized that the version of Supergirl viewers will see in “Woman of Tomorrow” will be quite different from past live-action portrayals. He’s pointed out that her upbringing on a desolate Krypton and subsequent arrival on Earth at a young age, witnessing numerous deaths, sets Kara Zor-El apart from Superman who was raised by loving parents. This harsh beginning, Gunn suggests, makes the new Supergirl more hardened and world-weary compared to the traditional image. This character development reflects the broader plan for the revamped DC Universe, which intends to reimagine established characters with innovative perspectives and diverse tones.
Apart from Alcock, the comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow introduces Eve Ridley as the young alien character Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts as the wicked Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Jason Momoa will first appear as the Czarnian bounty hunter Lobo. Notably, David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham are included in the cast, playing Supergirl’s parents from Krypton, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze respectively.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled to fly into theaters on June 26, 2026.
