Superheroes are known for their amazing costumes, and these outfits are a key part of what makes them memorable. Costumes not only help villains recognize them, but also create a powerful image that fans can rally behind. This is particularly true for characters like Superman and Supergirl, whose outfits clearly represent their values. However, when it comes to style, Supergirl consistently has the more impressive and diverse wardrobe over the years.
Supergirl’s costumes have evolved quite a bit over the years, largely because her character and backstory have been reimagined many times since her debut in 1959. Despite these changes, she always looks fantastic! Here’s a ranking of her five best costumes. We’re focusing on designs from the main comic book timeline, though we also appreciate some of her amazing looks from alternate universes.
5) The Original (Action Comics #252)

No list of iconic superhero costumes would be complete without Supergirl’s original outfit. It’s the design that launched everything, and all subsequent costumes draw inspiration from it in some way. The costume itself is quite simple: a fitted blue dress – the same blue as Superman’s suit – with long sleeves and a small ruffle at the hem. A yellow belt cinches the waist, and the House of El symbol adorns the chest. A red cape and matching boots complete the look, making it a timeless and perfect design for its era.
This Silver Age costume is the iconic, go-to look for Supergirl. Though there have been updates over the years, often to make the outfit more practical – especially considering the original skirt wasn’t very functional – this classic design remains the standard. It’s a timeless look that everything else is based on.
4) The New 52

Supergirl’s New 52 costume is definitely divisive – people either love it or dislike it, and some criticisms are understandable. However, it’s also a very unique interpretation of her classic look. Unlike previous designs, it doesn’t include a dress or skirt, but it’s not simply pants either. Instead, it’s a blue, long-sleeved bodysuit with red and gold detailing, and notably, no belt. The cape fastens around her neck instead of being tucked into the suit. Her boots were also completely revamped, featuring a modern, fashionable design with diamond-shaped cutouts. This new look is finished off with a shorter hairstyle for Supergirl.
To be honest, this costume seems designed more for style than practicality. While the boots are undeniably cool, they don’t seem very useful, and although the leotard might help with movement, the cape and how it fastens around the neck are questionable. Despite these concerns, it’s a really striking look – a fresh, modern update to the classic heroine’s design.
3) Linda Danvers

Most of the Supergirl costumes we’re highlighting are from Kara’s run, but we also want to mention a particularly fun one from a different Supergirl – Linda Danvers. After a major storyline called Crisis on Infinite Earths, the original Supergirl, Kara Zor-El, disappeared from the story, and Linda Danvers took her place. She became Supergirl by merging with a being named Matrix – it’s a complicated but awesome story! Naturally, this new Supergirl got a new costume, and it’s definitely among the best.
This costume design paid homage to the classic Supergirl look by maintaining the familiar dress and skirt combination, and using the traditional blue color for the skirt. However, it took a bold step by reimagining the top as a white, short-sleeved crop top featuring the House of El symbol and black detailing. This was paired with short white gloves and red boots. The design successfully incorporates elements from the animated Supergirl series, which contributes to its enduring popularity. Overall, it feels modern, youthful, and stylish.
2) Woman of Tomorrow

Supergirl’s costume usually stays true to its classic design, but a recent storyline, Superman: Woman of Tomorrow, introduced a strikingly different look that quickly became popular, even though it didn’t last long. Towards the end of the story, Kara’s outfit changes to a full-body suit with long pants, inspired by her traditional dress. It features red detailing on the sleeves and a noticeable gold belt. The cape is a blend of her classic and New 52 designs – it sits higher on her neck but still attaches at the shoulders – and is larger and more flowing than usual. Subtle details, like the stitching on her chest and around the House of El symbol, add to the overall look.
The Woman of Tomorrow costume is both elegant and beautiful, but what truly sets it apart is how it reflects Kara’s growth and acceptance of her role as a hero. It’s a fitting and striking look for someone who has become such a powerful and accomplished hero.
1) Rebirth

There’s a timeless appeal to reimagined classics, and Supergirl’s costume from Supergirl: Rebirth #1 is a perfect example. While Supergirl has worn many fantastic outfits, she always returns to her iconic look. In 2016, DC updated that original design in a way that already feels classic. The costume still features a dress, but with significant changes. The skirt is now a practical red, without the frills of previous versions. A slim, gold, V-shaped belt complements the House of El crest. She also sports a prominent shoulder cape and tall, pointed red boots that reach over the knee. It’s a stylish and functional design that manages to feel both modern and a tribute to her history.
This Supergirl costume is popular because it fits well with how the character was portrayed in other media, especially the TV show Supergirl on The CW. It created a consistent and unified look across different versions of the character. For many fans, this is the definitive Supergirl costume, and it’s hard to imagine any future designs topping it.
