A famously controversial manga that concluded in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump is getting a new life in a completely different format. While Shonen Jump has seen its share of debated endings recently, this particular series stands out – especially since its original anime adaptation was widely disliked. That adaptation effectively stalled the franchise’s popularity in the years that followed.
I remember when The Promised Neverland manga finished, there wasn’t much upset about how the story ended, but a lot of fans were really disappointed with how the anime adapted it. It seemed to kill a lot of enthusiasm for anything related to the series. But surprisingly, The Promised Neverland is making a comeback! A new live-action stage musical is currently in production, as announced in the latest issue of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.
The Promised Neverland Announces New Musical Revival
A stage musical adaptation of The Promised Neverland is planned for release in Japan in Winter 2026. Produced by RKX International to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original manga, the musical is currently holding auditions for the roles of Emma, Norman, and Ray. Details about the auditions are available on the official website, and this musical is likely just the first of several projects planned to commemorate the anniversary.
The announcement of a new Promised Neverland project is unexpected, considering other planned adaptations stalled after the anime ended poorly. While Prime Video once intended to create a live-action series – and even hired a writer and director – there haven’t been any updates on that plan in six years. This new project represents a revival of sorts for the franchise.
What Happened to The Promised Neverland?
The manga The Promised Neverland was a huge hit, and fans eagerly anticipated its anime adaptation. The first season of the anime did very well, but the second season unfortunately made some major missteps. It skipped over key events from the manga and rushed straight to the ending, leaving out crucial development and disappointing many viewers.
The adaptation made a really significant error that unfortunately damaged the entire franchise’s reputation. While it might seem harsh looking back, it’s difficult for any brand to recover from such strong negative feedback. No matter how hard The Promised Neverland tries, it will likely always be remembered for this major misstep.
