Superman 4K Review: An Almost Perfect Release (With One Infuriating Flaw)

James Gunn’s *Superman* quickly became a favorite among DC fans when it hit theaters this summer. Now, the film is available for fans to enjoy at home, having premiered on HBO Max last Friday and released on 4K and Blu-ray this Tuesday. Dedicated fans were particularly eager for the 4K UHD release, knowing Gunn’s commitment to quality physical copies of his movies, and this release doesn’t disappoint.

The movie *Superman* was released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on Tuesday. The 4K version came in standard packaging, a collectible SteelBook edition (which quickly sold out), and with a lenticular cover. It features stunning visuals in 2160p with Dolby Vision and HDR10, and immersive Dolby Atmos sound. Overall, this is one of the best new 4K releases available. Warner Bros. has consistently delivered high-quality discs this year, and *Superman* is a prime example of how a movie should look and sound on home media, alongside releases like *Sinners*.

What really stands out about the 4K version of *Superman* is the vibrant color palette. Director Gunn uses a lot of bright, saturated colors, especially for Superman’s suit and anything involving the Justice League. These colors are striking because they contrast with the more natural, subdued tones of the everyday world around the heroes. I was worried that in bringing this to home video, either the bright colors would be toned down or the natural colors would be made too bright, but the balance was handled perfectly.

Despite expectations, the image quality turned out remarkably well – it looks just as sharp and detailed as it does in a movie theater. The vibrant range of colors displayed on the screen is surprisingly impressive, and honestly, it’s not something we typically experience while watching at home.

This Blu-ray includes a wealth of bonus content, like a full-length documentary about the making of *Superman* and an in-depth look at the animation of Krypto. While there’s a lot to explore, these extras are also the most disappointing aspect of the release.

The 4K version of *Superman* doesn’t include any commentary or deleted scenes. While many new releases don’t have a lot of extra features, this is frustrating for *Superman* because both a commentary track with James Gunn and deleted scenes actually exist. Warner Bros. simply chose not to include them on the disc.

Warner Bros. has announced that extra features like commentary, deleted scenes, and a blooper reel will be available with the digital version of *Superman* at a later date. It’s possible the studio released the physical disc quickly to coincide with its streaming debut, or that these features simply took longer to complete. Whatever the reason, the extras that fans really want are being saved for the digital release, which seems a bit backwards.

The good news is that buying the 4K disc also includes a digital copy, so everyone who purchases it will be able to use those extra features. However, a lot of people prefer physical discs specifically to avoid the problems that can sometimes come with digital content and the companies that sell it.

Aside from one annoying problem with the special features, the 4K version of *Superman* is nearly perfect. The lenticular cover, which is only available at Walmart, is a cool addition – it lets the packaging switch between images of Superman and Clark Kent.

If there’s a list of 2025 movies with must-have 4K releases, Superman has to be near the top.
