Superman: 7 Obscure DC Easter Eggs & References You Might’ve Missed in James Gunn’s Movie

Watching a superhero movie in a theater is a special experience. The action feels more impactful, and the music is truly impressive. For example, *Superman* really comes to life on a big screen – the flying scenes especially make you feel like you’re flying with Superman himself! Of course, watching at home has its perks too. Luckily, *Superman* will soon be available to stream on HBO Max, so you can enjoy it at your own pace.

Superhero movies are famous for hiding little surprises, called Easter eggs, for fans to find. James Gunn’s *Superman* is no different, packed with nods to DC comics and other projects. Here are seven hidden references you might have overlooked in the movie.

7) Chocos Teases Another Member of the Justice League

The villain known as Hammer of Boravia launches an attack on Metropolis. He targets an office building housing the employees of Chocos, a popular cookie company. Interestingly, the hero Martian Manhunter is known throughout DC Comics for his love of Chocos cookies, even battling other heroes to protect his stash. With a movie in development, the live-action version of Martian Manhunter might get the chance to replicate this iconic habit.

6) Perry White Hasn’t Wanted to Be Called “Chief” for Years

The Daily Planet is a key setting in *Superman* stories, as Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen all work there as reporters. While it appears to be a relaxed work environment thanks to their boss, Perry White, he still holds his employees accountable – famously correcting Jimmy Olsen when he calls him “chief.” This playful pushback against the title is a long-running joke and a nod to a tradition within DC Comics’ portrayal of the media.

5) Jitters Is a DC Universe Mainstay

Lex Luthor unleashes a giant monster to keep Superman occupied, causing widespread danger. Luckily, Superman arrives just in time to rescue many people and even a few local businesses. Among those saved is Jitters, a well-known coffee shop featured in the Arrowverse, which was directly in the path of the monster in the story of *Superman*.

4) The Son of Another Superman Actor Is Present

Lex Luthor often uses the media to attack Superman, giving interviews to paint him in a negative light. The reporter covering these events is played by Will Reeve, son of the original Superman actor, Christopher Reeve. Interestingly, Will Reeve is also a real-life journalist, currently working for ABC News, who simply documents what’s happening in Metropolis without giving Luthor much attention.

3) Markovia Is Alive and Well in James Gunn’s Franchise

Okay, so diving into the world-building of Superman, it’s fascinating to see how much thought went into the geopolitical landscape. Beyond Metropolis, we get glimpses of two nations – Boravia and Jarhanpur – and they’re actually pretty central to Lex Luthor’s schemes, as he tries to start a conflict between them. But it doesn’t stop there! If you look closely at one of the maps Eve Tessmacher sends to Jimmy Olsen, you’ll spot Markovia. And for comic book fans, Markovia is a big deal – it’s the home country of heroes like Geo-Force and Terra. It’s cool to see those little details hinting at a larger DC universe, even in the movies!

2) Simon Stagg Isn’t Helping Make Billionaires Look Good

Besides LuthorCorp, Stagg Industries is another large company with offices in Metropolis. Simon Stagg, the father-in-law of the hero Metamorpho, plays a role in keeping Superman imprisoned within Lex Luthor’s artificial universe. Given that Stagg allowed his grandchild to be kidnapped and almost killed by a competitor, he’s probably just as ruthless as Luthor himself.

1) The Villains Continue to Fill Up Belle Reeve

Even though Lex Luthor tried hard to defeat Superman, his plan failed. Mister Terrific shut down his portal, and the police arrested him. They’re taking him to Belle Reeve, the prison where Amanda Waller’s Suicide Squad is held. Before he’s finished, Luthor might try to gather allies for a future confrontation in *Man of Tomorrow*.

Superman starts streaming on HBO Max on September 19.
