Superman Made a Profit for DC Despite Not Hitting the Billion-Dollar Mark (Find Out How Much It Brought in)

The new DC Universe is getting rave reviews! Creature Commandos, the first release, has a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics loving its emotional story and exciting action. Peacemaker isn’t far behind, scoring 94% after its second season finished on HBO Max. People clearly enjoy John Cena’s complex character, especially now that he’s interacting with DCU’s most famous hero. While the DC Studios shows are great, Superman still stands out as a fan favorite, and people are still talking about it months after it came out.

James Gunn and his team should be pleased with the positive response from fans, but ultimately, box office numbers are what truly matter. Superman earned a respectable $616.7 million with a budget of $225 million – a good result, especially considering the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the biggest superhero franchise, is currently facing challenges attracting audiences. Despite this success, some critics point to the film not reaching $1 billion in revenue as evidence that the new DC Universe isn’t taking off.

While the movie’s box office numbers tell part of the story, they don’t show the full picture. Bloomberg reports that when you include ticket sales, merchandise, and rentals, Superman actually earned Warner Bros. Discovery over $100 million, making it a major success this year. Plus, the 2025 film is just the beginning – DC Studios has another project planned that could be even more popular.

Man of Tomorrow Can Take the DCU to New Heights

Warner Bros. Discovery could easily stop here and be satisfied, but they’re committed to building the DC Universe and have approved a sequel, Man of Tomorrow. James Gunn’s new film won’t be a typical follow-up; it will focus on both Superman and Lex Luthor. This is a smart move because Man of Tomorrow promises to take the Superman story in a completely new direction for movie audiences.

Everything suggests that Brainiac will be the reason Lex Luthor and Superman finally team up in 2027. This is exciting because Brainiac hasn’t been featured in a live-action movie yet. Several actors are eager to play the famous villain, and James Gunn is expected to cast a well-known star to generate buzz for the film.

Currently, the biggest potential obstacle to the success of the new Superman movie is Netflix’s planned takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery. Netflix generally prefers to release films on its platform quickly, without a long period of exclusive theatrical release. However, once Netflix executives review the project’s potential financials, they’ll likely make an exception and allow a proper theatrical run for DC’s upcoming team-up movie.
