David Corenswet’s portrayal of Man of Steel encounters the antagonist Brainiac in a fan-created artwork based on Superman. Following Nick Fury’s conversation with Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative, post-credit scenes have become common in comic book adaptations. Marvel is known for them, but DC films also use this technique. James Gunn’s version of Superman continues this trend, and a fan (@arifinity_) on X (formerly Twitter) has envisioned a sequel scenario where the movie’s post-credit scene sets up potential future events. In this fan art, Superman stands before Brainiac, appearing perplexed by the unknown entity he faces.
In this hypothetical post-credits scene, it’s a bit unclear what’s happening based on the picture alone, but if we consider the original story, Brainiac might have just landed on Earth as part of his quest to gather knowledge and data from all over the cosmos. Brainiac is known for reducing entire cities to miniature sizes and preserving them on his spaceship, thus safeguarding their wisdom while annihilating the planet they once stood on. Here’s a fan-made image depicting the scene; take a look:

In simpler terms, James Gunn has confirmed that “Superman” includes a scene after the credits, but it appears this scene won’t be setting up future DC Universe installments. Based on his experience with Marvel, Gunn suggested he prefers to keep these scenes self-contained, like Howard the Duck in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” resolving a running gag or wrapping up a storyline from the film. While he isn’t against hinting at future projects, he won’t do so unless there’s a solid plan in place and production is already underway.
Currently, it appears that a potential sequel to the Superman series might be in its infancy. James Gunn has hinted at writing something which could possibly be a direct follow-up to Superman (perhaps even a World’s Finest film). Since he refrained from hinting at Adam Warlock’s appearance in the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it seems improbable that he would be preparing for Superman’s encounter with a powerful villain in his next project.
In another potential turn of events, it’s unlikely that Brainiac will make an appearance in the post-credits scene of Superman. However, introducing this villain into the DCU at some point down the line could prove to be quite intriguing. One of the miniature cities stored on Brainiac’s spaceship happens to be Kandor, which was once Krypton’s capital city. A significant part of Superman’s character revolves around his exploration and acceptance of his Kryptonian roots as he solidifies himself as Earth’s hero. Encountering Brainiac and discovering the existence of Kandor could lead to a deeply emotional progression that further develops this narrative, especially if the film draws inspiration from comic book stories where Brainiac is linked to the destruction of Krypton.
As a movie critic, I’d say: Introducing Brainiac in an upcoming Superman film would certainly add a fresh twist! Unlike other villains, Brainiac hasn’t made a live-action debut yet (though he’s had his share of animated appearances), making him an intriguing and exciting new adversary. Tapping into the vast Superman lore, Brainiac has the potential to become one of the most compelling enemies the Man of Steel has faced on the big screen. Director James Gunn is likely brainstorming creative ways to incorporate this formidable foe into the storyline.
