The film written and directed by James Gunn, titled Superman, is currently basking in popularity. This movie has been praised on social media and currently boasts a 85% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, one of the highest scores for DC films on this review aggregator. Rotten Tomatoes confirmed yesterday that Superman has officially become a “verified hit” with an impressive 96% audience score based on over 1,000 verified ratings from Amazon Prime Early Access screenings on Tuesday night and early releases in various countries.
This audience score for a DC film is the highest ever recorded, outranking critically acclaimed films such as Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins (94%) and The Dark Knight (also 94%), along with The Dark Knight Rises (90%), The Batman (87%), Wonder Woman (83%), Shazam! (82%), and James Gunn’s own The Suicide Squad (82%).
In more recent times, the audience ratings of Superman films have surpassed those of the original 1978 film with Christopher Reeve (86%) and its sequels II (76%), III (23%), and IV: The Quest for Peace (16%). For instance, Superman Returns from 2006 achieved a score of 60%, while Man of Steel directed by Zack Snyder in 2013 soared to an impressive 75%. Some other films featuring Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman include Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice from 2016 (63%), Justice League from 2017 (67%), Zack Snyder’s director’s cut of Justice League in 2021 (92%), and the latest addition, Black Adam from 2022 (87%).
Spencer Perry from ComicBook observed in his review of Superman, stating that Gunn demonstrates a fearless approach to incorporating the essential comic book aspects present in the original content. He commended the director of Guardians of the Galaxy for creating a film that soars, featuring an exceptionally well-matched cast, boasting stylish action sequences, and displaying a gracefulness that numerous DC followers have eagerly anticipated witnessing in live-action.
With audiences seeming tired of the usual superhero fare, Superman seems like a refreshing change,” Perry explains. “The latest film serves as a reminder of why the superhero genre was so popular for more than a decade, by capturing what fans have always loved about this character and world in a way that feels genuine. It’s easy to think that James Gunn, after over a decade since the release of the first Guardians of the Galaxy, might not have much left to offer for this kind of movie. However, Superman demonstrates that he remains one of our top creators of superhero stories on mainstream platforms, and it bodes well for the DCU if this is the caliber of film they can produce from the start.
The upcoming movie from DC Studios titled “Superman” is set to hit U.S. theaters on July 11. This film features David Corenswet portraying Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Other notable cast members include Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/the Engineer, Wendell Pierce as the editor-in-chief of The Daily Planet Perry White, Neva Howell as Ma Kent, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Pa Kent, Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
