Superman Sequel Update Raises a Major DCU Question About Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern Future

So, the upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow, is going to pick up where the Superman movie from 2025 left off, which is awesome. But it looks like it might also deal with what’s next for the Lanterns storyline, and that’s got me thinking about Guy Gardner. He was the first Green Lantern we met in the DCU, part of Superman’s team, and even a bit of a rival! But honestly, it doesn’t seem like the future of the Green Lantern franchise is resting on his shoulders, which makes me wonder what they have planned for him. It’s a bit of a mystery right now!

I’m so excited for the Lanterns series! It’s finally going to really bring the Green Lantern world into the DCU. It’s coming out in August 2026 and will star Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan – two of the biggest Green Lanterns from the comics. Plus, they’re introducing Sinestro, and I’m hoping we’ll see a ton of other cool alien characters as the show goes on!

Will Guy Gardner & John Stewart Both Be In Man Of Tomorrow?

Sources say Aaron Pierre will reprise his role as John Stewart in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie, effectively linking it to the Superman sequel and creating a crossover event with the Lanterns series. This is great news, as it confirms Lanterns will be closely connected to the broader DC Universe, and that the Green Lanterns will play a significant role in major films like the next Superman movie. Even though details about the Lanterns storyline are still emerging, it’s exciting to learn that the series will help set the stage for one of the DCU’s biggest projects.

This news brings up a big question about Guy Gardner’s role. After the Superman movie came out, it looked like Guy would be the main Green Lantern character connected to that part of the DC Universe, while John Stewart and Hal Jordan would focus on separate stories. This makes sense because Superman and the Green Lantern stories have very different tones, so it might feel odd to see both John and Guy in the same projects.

Okay, so with Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner popping up in the Lanterns series, it’s clear the HBO folks have a bit of a challenge on their hands – balancing those very different Green Lantern personalities. That’s why it feels right to me that both he and Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan would be back for Man of Tomorrow. Honestly, I think fans would be pretty bummed if we got a new Green Lantern in the sequel and didn’t see Hal again, especially after he was such a big part of the first Superman movie. From a universe-building perspective, it just makes sense to keep them together. But, and this is a big but, story-wise, I’m not sure it’s the smartest move.

Including two Green Lanterns in the same movie as Superman could steal the spotlight from the hero of his own story, which is a potential issue. The cast of the movie is already quite large, making it hard to give everyone enough screen time and development. Adding more characters increases that challenge. Since Green Lanterns share similar powers and origins, the film would need to work extra hard to make them distinct. The movie can’t assume everyone watching has seen the mature HBO series featuring those characters, so clear differentiation is essential.

What Is Guy Gardner’s Future In The DCU?

The situation with Guy Gardner and John Stewart in Man of Tomorrow highlights a larger issue the DC Universe (DCU) will likely encounter: limited screen time. The DCU probably won’t be able to support multiple separate movie and TV franchises for each Green Lantern. Instead, we’ll likely see Guy and John working together frequently. Given John Stewart’s greater popularity, he’s expected to be the primary focus, potentially meaning Guy Gardner will have a less prominent role.

Since Guy Gardner was shown before anyone else, it seems DC is deliberately downplaying a character from their very first movie. This is an issue they need to address.

Solving this really hinges on the story of Lanterns. Because there are so many unknowns about the show’s plot, it’s hard to predict what will happen in the DCU afterward. The most promising approach seems to be finding a way to keep both Guy Gardner and John Stewart as important characters within the larger DC Universe, even if they operate in different areas.

As a critic, I think the key to making both John Stewart and Guy Gardner work in this new DC Universe is to really lean into their strengths separately. I envision John taking the lead on more cosmic stories – think interstellar adventures with the Green Lantern Corps, really exploring that side of things. Meanwhile, Guy feels more grounded, a perfect fit for Earth-based team-ups with groups like the Justice Gang, and potentially evolving into a cornerstone of the Justice League or Society down the line. It’s a smart way to give each character space to shine, though it will require some flexibility as James Gunn continues to build out the DCU after Man of Tomorrow.
