The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics by IDW are set to welcome a fresh creative team this Fall, and their new roster promises to be nothing short of impressive. Despite the departure of writer Jason Aaron and artist Juan Ferrerya, a duo that has significantly contributed to the series’ success, they will be replaced by Gene Luen Yang as the writer and Freddie E. Williams II on art. This combination is one that comic book enthusiasts are likely to embrace wholeheartedly. Yang, in particular, boasts an impressive portfolio, making fans of TMNT confident that they will feel right at home with this new run in such a popular series.
Over time, Yang has been involved in numerous highly praised comic books, however, his most recognized piece thus far is “Superman Smashes the Klan“, a three-part limited series. This captivating tale centers around Superman and two young Chinese-American characters during 1946, as they confront the loathsome Ku Klux Klan and embrace their cultural roots. Besides this remarkable Superman narrative, Yang has also contributed to other cherished comics like “The Terrifics“, “New Super-Man“, and the critically acclaimed graphic novel “American Born Chinese“.
Not only is Yang a well-known creative force on this project, but Williams, with his talent for making comic art come to life, assures us that the thrilling escapades of the four brothers will feel incredibly real. Williams is recognized primarily for his work on the 1993 Robin series and Seven Soldiers, but he’s also tackled the Ninja Turtles previously, contributing to the Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic and creating several covers for IDW’s previous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. If there’s anyone capable of drawing the tough, green, pizza-loving ninja warriors in a way that can match Ferrerya’s work, it’s Williams.
In a twelve-issue series written by Aaron and Ferrerya, the Ninja Turtles reconnected after being apart for years, drawn back together by hardship and foes but staying united out of affection for one another. The conclusion of this run offered them optimism about their city’s and relationship’s future that they hadn’t experienced in a long time. Although specifics about the upcoming series are still scarce, it’s expected to increase the tension even further for everyone’s beloved mutant ninjas. A lethal assassin named Ujigami now roams the city, and it’s on the turtles to demonstrate the essence of Turtle Power, while preserving their rekindled affection for each other throughout the journey.
Not only are Yang and Williams avid TMNT enthusiasts, but their work promises an enjoyable read for any fan equally passionate about this team of brothers. This impressive duo is poised to elevate the turtles’ comic book journey even further, and I am thrilled to be along for the ride as it unfolds.
