Following the huge success of Superman as one of the year’s biggest movies, DC fans were excited about the new cinematic universe and David Corenswet’s portrayal of the iconic hero. When the film became available to watch at home, a surprising clip began circulating online: a heated argument between Corenswet and the film’s director and writer, James Gunn. The footage, taken on set during filming, quickly went viral.
James Gunn and David Corenswet were deeply engaged in a discussion about a crucial scene: Superman’s final showdown with Lex Luthor, where they debate the meaning of humanity and Lex’s interpretation of Jor-El’s message. After several attempts, Corenswet started to analyze the scene and its lines, leading to a moment that, while seemingly ordinary, convinced DC fans that they had found the perfect actor to portray Superman.
Superman’s David Corenswet Breaks Silence on Viral Argument With James Gunn
In a recent interview with Variety, Jonathan Bailey discussed a specific moment with David Corenswet. Bailey described the scene as having “tension, but not friction,” a phrase Corenswet himself said he liked. This moment, which became a viral video earlier this year, was something Corenswet was happy was shared publicly.
I’m grateful we captured that on film, and it was fascinating to hear people’s reactions – ranging from ‘that’s just how things usually go’ to ‘that was a really difficult work situation.’ I’ve definitely experienced similar things before. What struck me was how patient James was. He rarely got frustrated with me, likely because he understood I was challenging him because I thought I might have a different perspective, and he valued that input. I don’t want a director to simply let me do my own thing; I’m offering ideas that could actually improve the project, and ultimately, benefit everyone involved.
He explained that he felt he couldn’t perform well any other way. He’d received similar feedback in acting school, which proved to be a valuable lesson. Actors need to be able to let go and not wait for the perfect moment. He described a common practice of starting an action—like walking or speaking a line—before feeling fully prepared.
David Corenswet’s explanation of the moment, and how James Gunn’s feedback actually improved his performance, highlights why releasing the clip was ultimately beneficial. While the exchange might initially appear tense or suggest a difficult working relationship, both Gunn and Corenswet have clarified that it was a productive conversation between two artists striving to fully understand each other and refine their work.
Fans of Superman have reason to be excited! David Corenswet and James Gunn will be working together again soon, as filming for the new ‘Man of Tomorrow’ movie is set to begin next year, with the film expected to release in 2027. While Corenswet likely has a strong understanding of Superman now after the positive reception to his performance, there’s a good chance he and Gunn will have many more in-depth discussions about the character—all driven by their shared desire to make the best possible movie.
