Superman is a hugely popular and iconic character who helped create the superhero world we know today. While his battle with Doomsday and apparent death in “The Death of Superman” is famous, it wasn’t the only time he’s faced a fatal challenge in the comics. In fact, many fans consider the storyline “The Final Days of Superman” to be even more heartbreaking and impactful for DC Comics, though it doesn’t get as much attention.
New 52 Superman Met a Heartbreaking End
“The Final Days of Superman” storyline focused on the death of Superman as he was reimagined in DC’s New 52 universe. In 2011, DC Comics relaunched its entire line of comics with the New 52, giving many heroes, including Superman, fresh starts and significant changes. This version of Superman was different from previous ones – he was younger, more headstrong, and less experienced. He also had a new look, lacking the traditional red trunks, and experienced a difficult childhood after losing his parents early on. He even had a romantic relationship with Wonder Woman. These changes sparked a lot of debate among fans, who were divided on whether they liked this new take on the iconic hero.
In 2016, DC Comics revamped its universe once more with “Rebirth.” This brought back the classic Superman – the older, more hopeful version fans remembered from before the “New 52” reboot – along with his family, Lois Lane and their son, Jon Kent. To make way for the return of the original Superman, the Superman from the “New 52” storyline had to be written out. “The Final Days of Superman” provides a poignant and emotional conclusion to that version of the character and effectively closes the chapter on the entire “New 52” era.
Superman’s death in the New 52 storyline wasn’t a single event, but a result of damage accumulated over time. It started during the ‘Darkseid War’ when he was exposed to powerful energy on the planet Apokolips. This briefly made him incredibly strong, but it also began to break down his cells. Using his new Solar Flare ability – a massive burst of energy – made the cellular damage even worse. In a desperate attempt to heal, Superman exposed himself to Kryptonite, but this ultimately only hastened his death.
As Superman neared his final days, he focused on rescuing people and putting his affairs in order. Around the same time, a prisoner named Denny Swan was struck by a strange energy bolt, granting him Superman’s powers. The bolt also caused Denny to believe he *was* Superman – or rather, Clark Kent – which slowly led to a mental breakdown. Convinced the current Superman was an imposter, Denny attacked him. He then tracked down the original Superman, who was living under the name Clark White with his family on a farm, and attacked him as well. Both Supermen, along with Batman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl, had to join forces to stop Denny’s destructive behavior.
During the battle, Denny’s powers became increasingly erratic, putting everything around him at risk of a huge explosion. To prevent the disaster, New 52 Superman made the ultimate sacrifice, flying Denny high into the atmosphere and unleashing a final Solar Flare. Both of them died – Denny immediately, and Superman soon after. As the Kryptonite in his system took effect, Superman was surrounded by those he loved. He peacefully passed away in Wonder Woman’s arms, expressing his gratitude for a fortunate life. His body then dissolved into a burst of energy, leaving only ashes behind. The previous Superman vowed to continue his counterpart’s legacy, setting the stage for the *Rebirth* reboot.
The Final Days of Superman Tackled the Finality of Death
When it comes to Superman’s various deaths in comics, “The Final Days of Superman” truly focuses on the idea of death being permanent. Unlike previous storylines – like “The Death of Superman,” where he simply recovered from a coma, or *All-Star Superman*, which transformed him into an energy being – this version of Superman’s death in the New 52 universe is meant to be final and is handled with the seriousness it deserves.
Okay, so this isn’t your typical superhero spectacle. This story really digs into the emotional weight of Superman facing his own mortality. We see him sharing the news with those closest to him – Lana Lang is understandably crushed, and Lois Lane gets the incredibly difficult task of documenting his final days. It’s fascinating to watch Batman, always the problem-solver, grapple with the fact that he *can’t* fix this. Beyond the grief, Superman wisely prepares for the future, entrusting Supergirl with the mantle of Earth’s protector. But the heart of the film, for me, lies in the relationship between Superman and Wonder Woman. Discovering he has so little time left, their final conversation is genuinely moving and beautifully portrays their deep love. The final scenes, with everyone gathered around him, are incredibly touching – it’s a goodbye that feels earned and profoundly sad. It’s not about punches and explosions; it’s about loss, legacy, and love.
The emotional impact of this story comes from the fact that the Superman from the New 52 storyline truly died and won’t be coming back. Even though the original Superman returned, the New 52 version still perished, leaving fans saddened. DC explained this by revealing that Doctor Manhattan, a powerful being, had split Superman into two separate entities. The *Rebirth* storyline then combined the histories and personalities of both Supermen, effectively creating a single, updated version of the character for modern stories. Despite this major change to the timeline and the merging of the two versions, the New 52 Superman remains gone, emphasizing that his death was permanent.
The Final Days of Superman Marked the End of the New 52 Era
Superman’s death in the New 52 comics marked the end of an important period for DC Comics. The New 52, which lasted from 2011 to 2016, wasn’t necessarily DC’s best run, but it definitely left a lasting impression. While the new characters and storylines introduced during that time had mixed results, declining sales and problems with continuity, along with negative feedback from fans, ultimately led DC to conclude the New 52 and launch a fresh start with *Rebirth*.
Despite its controversial history, the New 52 era of DC comics left a lasting mark. It introduced a generation of fans to these characters and their stories, and many readers found the heroes to be more realistic and easier to connect with. The New 52 also influenced films like Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe, particularly in how Superman was depicted. Though not without flaws, this version of the DC Universe holds a special place for many fans who were disappointed to see it end. The storyline “The Final Days of Superman” served as a tribute to the New 52, giving readers a meaningful and conclusive ending to the universe they had followed for years.
Although “Death of Superman” is better known, “The Final Days of Superman” is more impactful because it truly felt like the end of an era for both the character and the New 52 continuity. While the New 52 isn’t everyone’s favorite version of Superman or the DC Universe, it still had a dedicated fanbase who were inspired by it. By honoring the creators and readers who loved the New 52, the story delivered a powerful depiction of death that permanently altered the DC Universe.
