Sydney Sweeney Responds To Christy’s Disappointing Box Office After Streak Of Flop

Despite poor ticket sales, Sydney Sweeney defends her performance in the new movie, Christy. The film tells the true story of Christy Martin, a pioneering female boxer who became famous in the 1990s, and explores the troubled relationship with her husband and coach as it turned dangerous.

David Michôd’s new film, Christy, starring Sydney Sweeney, Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Katy O’Brian, surprisingly earned $1.3 million globally during its opening weekend, despite an estimated production cost of $30 to $40 million. Sweeney has previously starred in successful films; Anyone But You made $220 million and Immaculate grossed $35.1 million – both performed well considering their budgets.

Honestly, 2025 isn’t looking great for Sydney Sweeney. Her movie Eden, with Ana de Armas and Vanessa Kirby, didn’t do well in theaters – it only made $2.7 million worldwide with a $35 million budget. It did find some success after it was released for streaming, though. And unfortunately, her other film, Americana, didn’t even hit $1 million at the box office, but thankfully you can now rent or buy it online.

After the opening weekend of Christy, Sydney Sweeney shared a message on Instagram (November 10th) stating that they create art to make a difference, not just to get high numbers. She highlighted that Christy‘s portrayal of domestic violence was the most meaningful project of her career. You can see her full post below.

Sweeney expressed immense pride in the film, calling the experience a great honor. She explained that the movie represents survival, courage, and hope, and that through their work on it, they’ve been able to raise awareness about domestic violence. The entire team believed Christy’s story had the power to save lives.

Despite mixed reactions from critics, audiences on Rotten Tomatoes overwhelmingly love Christy, indicating the film is resonating with viewers as its creator, Sweeney, intended. Christy might spark debate, but it tackles a significant topic. Though the studio is likely concerned about box office results, Sweeney has expressed satisfaction with the film’s release.

Despite recent films not performing as well as hoped, Sydney Sweeney’s team is optimistic that her new movie, The Housemaid, co-starring Amanda Seyfried, will be a box office success before 2026. While Sweeney seems pleased with her role in Christy, her previous two films didn’t quite achieve the impact they should have, regardless of how profitable they were. However, even discussing the movie in this way could generate more public interest.
