Sydney Sweeney Starring In Surprising Horror Movie Reimagining With a Twist

Sydney Sweeney has quickly become one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars. After gaining recognition with Emmy nominations for hit shows like Euphoria and The White Lotus, she successfully transitioned to film, exceeding expectations with movies like the thriller The Housemaid, which earned over $400 million. Now that Euphoria has finished, Sweeney is taking on new challenges. She’s started her own production company, Honey Trap, with a deal at Sony Pictures, and her first project will be a gothic horror film based on a classic American ghost story.

As reported by Deadline, Thomasin Sweeney will star in a new movie based on Lindsey Anderson Beer’s novel Hollow, which is a fresh take on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Beer, who recently directed Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, is writing and directing the film. Production companies LuckyChap and Beer’s Lab Brew, along with Sweeney’s Honey Trap, are also involved. Publisher Putnam (an imprint of Penguin Random House) quickly secured the rights to the novel, preventing a bidding war and demonstrating their strong belief in the story. Sweeney will play Katrina Van Tassel, a character significantly reimagined from her more subdued role in Washington Irving’s original tale.

How Hollow Will Put a Spin on a Familiar Story

Washington Irving’s classic story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, was first published in 1820 and has fascinated audiences ever since, inspiring countless books and movies. The story centers around Ichabod Crane, a tall and somewhat awkward schoolteacher, who competes for the affection of Katrina Van Tassel. He faces rivalry from the local man, Brom Bones, and ultimately disappears after a terrifying encounter with a headless horseman. The tale was first adapted for the screen in a 1922 silent film called The Headless Horseman, and has been retold many times, including Tim Burton’s 1999 movie Sleepy Hollow and a 2013 television series that updated the story for a modern audience.

J.R. Beer’s upcoming novel, Hollow, reimagines the classic story by focusing on Katrina Van Tassel as the main character. She’s at the heart of a thrilling mystery and a captivating supernatural love triangle. Although not yet released, the book is now scheduled for fall 2027, and a movie adaptation is being developed at the same time. This allows Beer to maintain a strong level of creative control, ensuring the film accurately reflects Katrina’s point of view as presented in the book. It’s possible the movie could come out shortly after the book is published.
