Sydney Sweeney faced a challenging year, including some public attention over her clothing choices and several projects that didn’t perform well. She’s starting 2026 with a film that hasn’t received positive reviews.
The actress became famous after playing Cassie in Euphoria, and her popularity exploded during the often-discussed press tour for Anyone But You. While 2025 was a busy year for her, many of her projects weren’t well-received. Her crime thriller, Americana, will now premiere on Starz on January 1, 2026, following a disappointing performance in theaters.
Tony Tost wrote and directed Americana, which was his first film. The movie features Sweeney, along with Paul Walter Hauser, Halsey, Eric Dane, Zahn McClarnon, and Simon Rex.
The crime Western was filmed in February 2022 and first shown at the South by Southwest Film Festival in 2023. However, it wasn’t released in theaters until August 15, 2025, after Lionsgate purchased the distribution rights in March 2024.
The film initially received positive reviews, but its score on Rotten Tomatoes has since fallen. While audiences generally liked it, giving it a 78% rating, that didn’t lead to strong ticket sales. With a $9 million budget, the film only earned about $500,000 at the box office.
Sydney Sweeney Had Multiple Projects in 2025
In addition to Americana, which premiered in August, she was involved in several important projects. Ron Howard’s thriller Eden, featuring a well-known cast, was recently released in theaters but didn’t perform as well as expected.
Sweeney also starred in the crime thriller Echo Valley, produced by Ridley Scott, which was released directly to streaming. While critics weren’t impressed, the film gained a strong following as viewers discovered it on Apple TV months after its June 13th release.
In 2025, Sweeney took on a unique role in the sports biopic Christy. While her performance initially received positive attention, the film ultimately failed to connect with audiences. It experienced a massive drop in ticket sales after its opening weekend – a record 91.7% decrease, according to Box Office Mojo – and only earned $1.9 million worldwide.

Her most recent film was released to a somewhat divided reception. It’s currently earned $31.2 million, but cost $35 million to make.
