Syfy’s Criminally Cancelled Sci-Fi Series Should Have Run for 10 Seasons (& I’m Still Mad)

I’m still so upset about Syfy cancelling that amazing sci-fi show! Honestly, it felt like it deserved at least ten seasons, and I really wish they’d let the story finish. You know how it is with fantasy and sci-fi – there’s so much potential for these shows to keep going, especially if they’re based on big book series or deal with complex ideas. The biggest problem now is just keeping a show from getting cancelled in the age of streaming. And while that one show did better than most, it should have gone on for even longer than six seasons!

Sci-fi shows often get canceled quicker than other series because they appeal to specific audiences and are expensive to make. It’s especially disappointing when a show ends mid-story, leaving viewers with unanswered questions. Even shows that do finish their storylines sometimes feel rushed. A recent example is a show that started on Syfy and moved to Prime Video – it had a lot of potential and source material, but unfortunately ended before it could fully explore everything.

The Expanse Should’ve Run for 10 Seasons but Didn’t Adapt the Entire Book Series

Originally airing on Syfy in 2015, The Expanse seemed perfectly positioned for success. Based on the popular books by James S.A. Corey, the show was a complex political drama set in a future where humans had colonized space. Given the books’ popularity and the success of shows like Game of Thrones with similar storylines, many expected The Expanse to quickly become a hit. However, it faced challenges throughout its initial run and was even cancelled after three seasons. Thankfully, it was picked up by Prime Video for three more seasons, but still didn’t reach its full potential. The show concluded after six seasons, leaving fans wanting more. While the ending wasn’t completely rushed, it didn’t fully adapt all of the material from the books and left some storylines unresolved.

The book series The Expanse includes nine novels, plus several shorter stories. Because the books are so long, the TV show could have continued for ten seasons if it hadn’t been cancelled. While the show did change some things from the books, that wasn’t a good enough reason to end it prematurely. There was plenty more story to tell, especially exploring what happened after the significant time jump in the final three novels.

I’m Still Upset The Expanse Didn’t Get the Run It Deserved

It’s frustrating that The Expanse didn’t reach its full potential as a TV show, despite being a well-made series. While it had the promise to become as popular as Game of Thrones, it never quite captured that same level of excitement, which ultimately led to its cancellation. The later books offered exciting possibilities for expanding the show’s universe and providing a more complete ending, and it’s disappointing we didn’t get to see that on screen. Thankfully, the entire story is still available through the books for fans to enjoy.
