The future of The Expendables franchise is now clear after the disappointing performance of its 2023 film. Though the action series, starring Sylvester Stallone, started strong in 2010, the latest movie’s poor reception led to doubts about whether more films would be made.
Lionsgate has officially purchased the rights to the Expendables franchise from Millennium Media. The studio, which previously handled distribution of the four Expendables movies in North America and the UK, will now be responsible for developing any future projects, including films, television series, and video games, based on the franchise.
Lionsgate and Millenium Media have made a deal that includes distribution rights for the new Rambo prequel, John Rambo. Noah Centineo is close to finalizing a deal to star as Rambo, a role previously made famous by Sylvester Stallone. Lionsgate will also lead production and serve as the main studio for all future Rambo films.
Lionsgate’s Brian Goldsmith, the Chief Operating Officer, said the company is thrilled about the potential future of both the Expendables and Rambo movie series.
This agreement strengthens Lionsgate’s collection of popular action movie series and shows our dedication to creating high-quality content for all types of media. We’re thrilled to bring fresh takes to both The Expendables and Rambo for both the big and small screen. With John Rambo, we’re assembling a talented team to update a beloved character for today’s audience.
Jonathan Yunger, President of Millennium Media, also expressed his enthusiasm for Lionsgate, calling them a reliable partner for future work on these films.
We’ve always known these franchises have lasting appeal, and this partnership will give them the support and worldwide audience they need to thrive. Lionsgate has a great history with big action movies, making them the perfect collaborator to develop the future of The Expendables and Rambo.
