When Ted Lasso first came out, it quickly became more than just a funny sports show – it turned into a huge hit around the world, loved for its positive spirit and well-developed characters. However, the third season received some criticism for feeling rushed, like it was trying to tie up all storylines too quickly and bring the story to a firm ending. Ted’s (Jason Sudeikis) return to the US seemed to confirm this, leading many to believe the show was over. So, it was a big surprise when a fourth season was announced, and fans expected it would focus on the characters remaining at the club. But Nick Mohammed, one of the original stars, recently revealed that the new season will be quite unexpected.
In a recent interview with Collider, Mohammed suggested he’s been asked to keep details under wraps. He admitted he can’t reveal anything about the new season without spoiling it, but confirmed filming is underway and he’s been spending time with the cast. While he remained tight-lipped, he did say the fourth season will focus on a completely new group of characters – a significant change from the familiar faces fans have come to enjoy.
Will Season 4 of Ted Lasso Sideline the Best Characters?

We expected new characters in the fourth season of Ted Lasso because the story involves Ted returning to Richmond to coach a women’s football team. However, a recent comment from a show insider hints that while we might see some of our favorite characters again, they likely won’t be the main focus.
The third season ended with the main characters poised to lead the show’s future. Roy Kent and Jamie are now co-managers of the men’s team, Rebecca has transferred ownership of the club to the fans, and Keeley has pitched the idea of a women’s team. This sets up a story focused on their leadership while Ted is away. While most of the original cast will be back for Season 4, the possibility that the show might move away from focusing on them has caused some disagreement among fans.
What made Ted Lasso truly special was the heartwarming connections and sense of family that developed among the players and staff at AFC Richmond. Switching the focus to a completely new group of characters feels less like a continuation of the story and more like starting over with a fresh beginning. It’s a risky move creatively. While Ted was a great character, the show’s strength was really its ensemble cast, and it would be a shame if they were all replaced, essentially making it a brand new series.
Production on Ted Lasso Season 4 is currently underway.
