Teen Mom’s Farrah Abraham Shares Why She Cut Contact With Her Parents

Even though Sophia Abraham is still over a year and a half away from turning eighteen, her mother, Farrah Abraham, has already chosen Sophia’s birthday gift.

Honestly, getting into that trauma center back in early 2022? It completely saved my life – seriously, the best thing I’ve *ever* done for myself. I keep thinking about it, and I’ve decided I want my daughter to have the same opportunity when she turns eighteen. It’s just…it changed everything, and I want that for her too.

The 34-year-old faced several challenges, including the loss of her boyfriend, Derek Underwood, just before their daughter, Sophia, was born. She also experienced growing tension in her relationship with her mother, Debra Danielsen.

Abraham recently shared on A&E’s *Secrets of Celebrity Sex Tapes* that she struggled with a difficult relationship with her mother. She explained that she felt her mother wasn’t there for her in the way she needed, a feeling that deeply affected her, and contributed to decisions like the 2013 release of *Farrah Superstar: Back Door Teen Mom*.

And while time can’t heal all wounds, intensive therapy can.

For Abraham, personal growth involved participating in a 12-step program focused on relationships, which included a thorough self-assessment of her patterns in those relationships.

Abraham explained that people often reflect on significant relationships – with parents, past partners, and others who’ve left a mark. This reflection helps identify recurring patterns in their lives. He personally realized his pattern was offering love as a form of protection, but never receiving it in return.

Abraham explained that people from his past weren’t around anymore because they didn’t contribute to what he truly needed: a sense of security and peace of mind.

Instead, the Nebraska native has learned to safeguard herself.

She explained that she wasn’t upset about no longer talking to Danielsen or her father, Michael Abraham. She believes they were simply taught to rely on others instead of being themselves, and that everyone struggles to find their own independence, with some never achieving it.

Her father revealed on the show *Secrets of Celebrity Sex Tapes* that he last told her he simply wants her to be happy and safe. He’s also fully supported her independent lifestyle.

Abraham shared that he constantly hears from people struggling with finding themselves. He believes that the key to being truly yourself lies in independence and thinking for yourself – something no one else can give you, only you can. It’s a gift you give to yourself.

The author of *My Teenage Dream Ended* says her strained relationship with her parents started after her high school boyfriend passed away in a car accident in 2008.

Abraham recalled feeling intensely angry at the time. He explained that mistreating a woman who had lost her husband would provoke a fierce and unforgettable reaction.

And for Abraham that rage stemmed from her parents’ reaction to the tragic incident.

Abraham explained that his parents’ lack of support and refusal to acknowledge Sophia’s father’s death ultimately led him to distance himself from them. He felt they weren’t there for him during a difficult time and expressed a strong desire to build a life with his daughter surrounded by people who genuinely cared and showed affection.

Reflecting on her experiences, Abraham realized that the most valuable lessons in motherhood came from observing those who hadn’t been present during her own difficult times. She explained, “Learning from what *didn’t* happen to me actually made me a better mom.”

However, she spends all her time with Sophia, and even began homeschooling her when she started having trouble in elementary school.

Abraham explained that his daughter was experiencing manipulative behavior and was exposed to abuse, bullying, and other harmful situations.

Knowing what Abraham went through *before* she even became a pregnant cheerleader, I completely understood why she felt that way. She told me she just couldn’t go through it again, because her own school experience had been so painful. She didn’t want to repeat that cycle, and honestly, neither did I. It was like she knew, deep down, that she needed to break that pattern.

She insists homeschooling isn’t as difficult as people think, and it gives both her and her daughter a lot more freedom.

Abraham explained that Sophia attends a completely online school. They’re able to travel and currently attend music festivals while continuing their education.

And then there are all the lessons not offered up in books.

While Abraham focuses on her comedy, a new book, and efforts to reduce teen pregnancy, Sophia is busy pursuing her own goals.

Abraham believes Sophia deserves a movie about her life, giving her a chance to tell her own story and share her unique view of the world. He’s eager to help make that happen, especially since Sophia is also releasing her own book soon, which he plans to fully support.

Although Sarah Abraham clearly adores her daughter, she isn’t alone among celebrities with difficult family relationships. Here’s a look at some other famous family feuds.

In January 2024, Bobby addressed speculation about a rift with Tan, following his announcement in November 2023 that he was leaving *Queer Eye* after eight seasons. (Bobby is shown second from the left in the picture.)

He assured *Vanity Fair* that he and Tan are doing okay. He explained they went through a personal issue, but it’s separate from their work on the show and wasn’t related to a romantic connection. It was something that had been building up between them privately.

In March 2024, Tan addressed claims that he tried to get his friend Jeremiah Brent to replace Bobby on the show *Queer Eye*.

Netflix and the production team held a thorough audition process. I didn’t recommend my friend for the role, but they ultimately got it because they were the most qualified. I also want to be clear that I didn’t help them get the part by sabotaging anyone else, as he explained in an Instagram post.

After years of speculation about a disagreement, Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty’s former co-star on *Charmed*, revealed on her December 2023 podcast, *Let’s Be Clear*, that Alyssa Milano supposedly gave a show producer an ultimatum: choose between her and Shannen. This situation, Combs claims, led to Shannen leaving the show in 2001.

In a February 2024 Instagram post, Alyssa stated she couldn’t get anyone fired and claimed that stories circulating about past events were simply inaccurate retellings, given how much time had passed.

At a MegaCon Orlando panel, Shannen stated that, to her knowledge, the story as it was originally told remains accurate and hasn’t been altered.

Shannen passed away in July 2024 after a yearslong battle with cancer.

During a September 2023 game of “Stir the Pot” with her daughter, Kelly Osbourne, on TopMob News, Sharon Osbourne revealed that she considered Topher Grace, of “That ’70s Show” fame, to be the rudest celebrity she’d ever encountered. She described him as a “rude little boy” and a “dastardly little thing.”

He did not respond to her remarks publicly.

You know, I remember when Ashton Kutcher was on *The Talk* back in 2014. I was chatting with Larry King a few years later, and I mentioned that Ashton seemed a little put out when I accidentally mispronounced his name on the show. He definitely had a bit of an attitude about it, and it stuck with me!

She remembered him asking, ‘Who are you and what have you accomplished in this field?’ She responded sharply, telling him, ‘Don’t underestimate me, because I’ll completely overwhelm you.’ She finished by saying, ‘You have no idea what you’re up against.’

In August 2022, Cassadee Pope and Maren Morris publicly disagreed with Brittany Aldean, the wife of country singer Jason Aldean. This followed a post Brittany shared on Instagram on August 23rd, where she thanked her parents for not allowing her to transition during a phase where she preferred traditionally masculine interests, and expressed her enjoyment of a feminine lifestyle.

In a 2022 TikTok trend, JoJo Siwa called Candace Cameron Bure the “rudest” celebrity she’d ever met, explaining that Bure once declined to pose for a photo with her at a red carpet event. Soon after, Cameron Bure apologized publicly, saying she regretted hurting Siwa’s feelings when she was younger and expressing her sincere remorse for not taking the picture.

Candace and the other person resolved their differences. However, when asked months later if her network, Great American Family, would ever feature same-sex couples as the main characters in holiday films, she said it wouldn’t, explaining that the network will continue to focus on traditional marriage.

JoJo, who publicly shared they are part of the LGBTQ+ community in 2021, responded to the actress’s comment on Instagram, calling it “rude and hurtful” to the entire LGBTQ+ community.

In June 2021, Courtney Love claimed Olivia Rodrigo had copied the album cover art of her band, Hole, for a promotional photo without giving credit. Olivia responded with a message of support, saying, “Love u and live through this sooooo much.” Courtney then playfully replied, “Olivia – you’re welcome. My favorite florist is in Notting Hill, London! DM me for details! I look forward to reading your note [winking face emoji].”

While on *Watch What Happens Live*, the *Happy Days* actor explained the reason for his difficult relationship with the *Forrest Gump* star while filming the 1989 movie *Turner & Hooch*.

I directed the film for thirteen days, and then Jeff Katzenberg, the producer, told me to go home – that I had everything I needed, he said.

Winkler and Hanks’ dog seemed to hit it off. “I really loved that dog,” Winkler said, “we got along great.”

He also refused to admit if he’s even seen the flick.

“You know what you did!”

Anyone who watched *The Hills* probably remembers that famous line from Lauren, spoken at the start of season three. The drama between her and Heidi began when Heidi started dating Spencer Pratt. It really exploded when Lauren claimed Heidi and Spencer spread a false rumor about her and Jason Wahler, suggesting she’d made a sex tape with him.

Tyrese and Dwayne Johnson had a public falling out after the release date for *Fast & Furious 9* was delayed until April 2020. On the same day, a spin-off movie featuring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham was announced for 2019. Shortly after, Tyrese said he would leave *Fast 9* if Dwayne Johnson was still involved.

Tyrese recently discussed the conflict with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, telling Van Lathan on *The Red Pill* podcast that he still hasn’t spoken to Johnson directly, though they plan to talk. He did, however, speak with one of Johnson’s producing partners, but not with Johnson himself.

Tyrese admitted he often ended up voicing concerns for others involved with the franchise, but he regretted being the only one to publicly share those feelings. He acknowledged it was a mistake, saying, ‘It wasn’t professional, and it wasn’t the right thing to do.’

No more bad blood here.

Taylor Swift and Katy Perry were famously feuding for years, with some believing their disagreement even sparked Taylor’s song “Bad Blood.” The conflict, which began with issues over a shared backup dancer and rivalry during concert tours, ended when Katy sent Taylor an actual olive branch as a peace offering before Taylor’s *Reputation* Tour began.

Taylor shared in an Instagram video that she found a real olive branch in her dressing room, saying it meant a lot to her.

Taylor captioned the video, “Thank you Katy.”

For years, Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker, stars of *Sex and the City*, dismissed rumors of a disagreement. However, those rumors resurfaced when Kim chose not to participate in a third movie and subsequently made comments about her co-star that many found surprising.

During a September 2017 episode of *Watch What Happens Live*, Andy Cohen asked Sarah Jessica Parker how she felt about Kim Cattrall telling Piers Morgan that they were simply colleagues and not friends.

She was deeply upset, explaining she felt heartbroken about something. They had discussed it the previous week, and she found the situation very disturbing because it didn’t match her memory of what had happened.

It’s definitely sad, but I believe what truly connects us is the shared experience we had. While it started as a professional project, it became deeply personal over the years. I’m hoping that the strong bond we formed through that long-term, meaningful work will outweigh any recent disagreements. Having the chance to be a part of something so special and connect with people through it was a real privilege.

And though they didn’t film scenes together, Kim did make a small appearance on And Just Like That.

Oh my god, can you BELIEVE these two? It all started way back in 2004! I was reading about it, and apparently, when Elton John got his Classic Songwriter Award at the Q Awards, he totally went OFF on Madonna. He basically said, ‘Madonna, the best LIVE act? Seriously?!’ And then he dropped the f-bomb and called her out for lip-syncing! He was SO angry, he actually said anyone who lip-syncs when people are paying good money – like 75 pounds! – to see them should be… well, he said something REALLY strong. I was shocked! It’s been a rivalry ever since, and honestly, I’m here for the drama! I’ve been following it obsessively ever since.

The actress, formerly on *Grey’s Anatomy*, caused a disagreement with the show’s creator back in 2008 when she asked to no longer be considered for an Emmy Award. She explained that she didn’t think her storylines that season were strong enough to deserve a nomination.

I’ll never forget when Shonda talked about Katherine’s choice on Oprah’s show, *Oprah’s Next Chapter*, back in 2012. She admitted it hurt, but also that she wasn’t completely shocked. She said something that really stuck with me: ‘When people show you who they are, believe them.’ It’s become a real guiding principle in my life, and honestly, it’s helped me so much over the years.

The fight between Nicki and Cardi at the Harper’s Bazaar Icon party during New York Fashion Week made headlines everywhere. A month later, Cardi publicly explained what started the argument with Nicki.

Cardi B told W magazine that someone has been repeatedly criticizing her. She explained that she’d talked to this person twice and thought they’d resolved the issue, but the negativity continued.

Honestly, things really blew up when I saw Cardi react to a tweet about how she parents Kulture. Apparently, Nicki liked a post questioning Cardi’s skills as a mom, then quickly unliked it – though Nicki says she never actually liked it in the first place. That’s what *really* set Cardi off, and I could see why!

Okay, so everyone thinks I’m crazy, but I was *this* close to making a fortune with a Bruno Mars tour! Seriously, millions! But I put it all on hold for Kulture, and I have *no* regrets. She’s my world, and I’m a really good mom, okay? It drives me nuts that people without kids are judging me, especially over something like seeing Bruno in the grocery store! Let’s be real, I’m not gonna randomly run into an artist like that again, so yeah, I went for it! It was a moment, and I’m not apologizing.

The conflict between Kanye West and Taylor Swift began in 2009 when he interrupted her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards. They later reconciled and became friends, but their relationship fell apart in 2016 after Kanye released his song “Famous,” which included a reference to Taylor.

Just before the Grammy Awards in February 2025, Kanye West began following only Taylor Swift on Instagram. He didn’t offer any explanation for this action, and Swift didn’t publicly acknowledge it.

“I don’t know her.”

I’ve been following this whole thing for over 15 years now, and it still amazes me! It all kicked off when Mariah was asked about other singers in an interview. When they brought up Jennifer Lopez, Mariah just said she didn’t know her, and honestly, that simple line started what feels like a never-ending story!
