A fresh chapter in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles journey calls for exciting alternate cover artworks! As writer Jason Aaron and artist Juan Ferreyra near the completion of their tenure on Teenage Mutan Ninja Turtles, a new creative duo is all set to step in and continue the adventures of our beloved turtle heroes. Good news for TMNT enthusiasts, as renowned Eisner Award-winning writer Gene Luen Yang and fan-adored artist Freddie E. Williams II are joining forces to guide the Turtles into uncharted territories. Their new story arc doesn’t begin until December, but in the interim, IDW Publishing is offering a sneak peek of some spectacular variant covers for the first issue.

Exclusively, ComicBook discloses December’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13 will showcase variant covers by artists Daniel Warren Johnson and Clayton Crain. In Daniel Warren Johnson’s Cover E, the Turtles enjoy a jolly skateboard session at a park alongside New York City residents; Michelangelo is seen soaring high on a skateboard emblazoned with “COWABUNGA.” On the other hand, Cover D by Clayton Crain delves into a more ominous atmosphere, where the Turtle brothers brandish their ninja tools, standing united against an undisclosed adversary.


Gene Luen Yang Teases His Run on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

At San Diego Comic-Con, we had a chance to chat with Gene Luen Yang about his forthcoming work on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Yang discussed the contrast between crafting stories for the TMNT compared to comics like Superman and Shang-Chi, named his preferred Turtle, dealing with the responsibility of following Jason Aaron, which aspects from his run will be continued, and more.

Yang shared that he has a deep affection for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He recounted watching the cartoon on TV with his brother as kids, playing with action figures, and discovering the original black-and-white comics created by Eastman and Laird. These encounters left him awestruck, admiring their gritty realism and the creativity that blended various genres seamlessly, from space adventures to demon fights.

Apart from commending the work produced by Jason Aaron and Juan Ferreyra, he hinted at how the upcoming storyline will further expand upon their narrative.

Speaking about Jason Aaron’s work, I must admit it’s a challenge for me to continue from where he left off, given my deep admiration for his contributions to the Turtles series. One aspect that stands out is how skillfully he rebuilt the brotherhood among the Turtles – initially they were apart, but by the end of his run, they had reunited. With issue #13, we’re starting off with them as a united team again, and it feels fantastic to depict this bond once more.


Without revealing too much, he’s working on something monumental, and it’s a significant element that we must acknowledge as we move forward in the story. I’m hoping, assuming everything goes smoothly, that diehard fans will find our continuation as a tribute to his original setup.
