Tekken 8 Really Is Getting Back on Track After a Truly Terrible Start to the Year

Tekken 8 just received a new update, patch 3.01, and it’s being praised by fans. The update also brings back the popular character Kunimitsu, and overall it’s a big success for the game’s developers, Bandai Namco.

If you haven’t been following Tekken 8 closely, it was facing major issues a few months back. The large Season 3 update released in March received a lot of negative feedback from players.

The main issue is that this season’s updates didn’t fix the unpopular changes introduced last year, and in some ways, they even created new problems.

The initial response to the game was very negative, forcing the developer to issue an apology and announce a plan for future updates.

About a month after Season 3 released, the team released patch 3.00.02. While it wasn’t expected to be a big deal, this update actually significantly improved Tekken 8. It fixed many of the issues caused by Season 3’s focus on overly aggressive and unbalanced gameplay.

Version 3.01 continues to refine the gameplay, with a major focus on the Heat system. Players are especially happy about the significant reduction in Heat regeneration for all characters.

Some characters had ways to get their special meter back during fights by using specific attacks. This often led to opponents playing defensively for long periods, which wasn’t very enjoyable.

Additionally, many of the unique attacks used by the Heat have been weakened, continuing a trend of adjustments that helped improve the game in the previous update.

Some previously very strong moves in the game have been adjusted. They’re still effective, but won’t feel as overwhelmingly powerful or unbeatable anymore. They now have clear weaknesses.

This is a really encouraging development for the game, which was at risk of losing its dedicated player base.

I’m curious to see how Tekken 8’s balance will evolve. While combos still feel a little too long, the recent changes to the Heat system should make matches flow better and be more engaging.

It’s great that Bandai Namco is listening to players and making changes, especially to the Heat system, which many felt was too strong. Some players were concerned the developers wouldn’t acknowledge any issues with it, so this response is a positive sign.

Update 3.01 introduces a new feature for online matches: a random rematch option and the ability to be randomly assigned a side. This random side selection is especially helpful for competitive players, allowing them to practice and improve their skills no matter which side they play as in tournaments.
