A fresh update has come for the Terminator series, with James Cameron hinting at a significant rewrite of the script. After 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate didn’t perform as well as hoped, the future of the franchise was unclear. However, Cameron shared last year that he had begun working on a new film.
Cameron recently shared that writing the next Terminator film has been difficult because of how quickly AI technology is changing. However, he told Io9 that he’s now able to fully focus on Terminator 7. Despite being busy promoting his new film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, he says he’ll soon have more free time to dedicate to the project.
Once the marketing for this project wraps up in about a month, I’ll finally have time to focus on writing and planning my next projects. I already have a lot of ideas – I have a thick stack of notes, about three inches high, which is how I always begin developing a script – specifically for a new Terminator movie. I’m planning to dedicate myself fully to writing it.
It looks like Terminator 7 might start moving forward early next year, but James Cameron notes that developing a believable sci-fi story is still difficult because of the need for constantly evolving technology.
Things are challenging. It feels like science fiction is now reality, and we’re facing problems that used to only exist in books and movies. I don’t think anyone can accurately predict the future, even a year or two ahead, and I’ve never felt less able to do so. I’m trying to prepare myself as best I can by thinking a couple of years ahead, just to be ready for whatever comes next.
While details about the next Terminator film are still scarce, James Cameron revealed to Empire magazine last September that he intends to completely reboot the series. He explained that the new movie will disregard everything established in the previous 40 years of Terminator films.
It looks like Sarah Connor and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator won’t be returning. Director James Cameron says this allows for a story with truly vulnerable heroes – people fighting for survival without help from authorities, forced to work outside the system while still trying to do what’s right. And he adds, the introduction of artificial intelligence will make things even more complex.
The future of the Terminator series will definitely look different from past installments. This isn’t unexpected, considering Dark Fate didn’t do well in theaters, even though it featured the return of Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger to their iconic roles.
Today’s younger audiences don’t connect with these classic characters as much because they haven’t seen Cameron’s original Terminator movie from 1984. If the Terminator series wants to stay popular for years to come, it’s essential to get younger viewers interested.
James Cameron plans to start working on the script for a seventh Terminator movie in early 2026, so a new film is probably still several years off. Even if Cameron writes a script he likes – and it remains relevant given how quickly AI technology is advancing – filming wouldn’t begin until 2027 at the soonest. This means we likely won’t see a new Terminator movie in theaters until 2028 or later.
James Cameron likely won’t direct a seventh Terminator movie. He hasn’t directed one since Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991, and only returned to the series as a producer with 2019’s Dark Fate. It’s currently unknown who will direct the next film, but Cameron recently hinted that an announcement could be coming soon.
