I still remember being blown away by Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre when it came out in 1976 – it really changed horror! And he kept delivering great scares with films like Poltergeist, Salem’s Lot, and The Funhouse, solidifying him as a true legend. But honestly, I think his 1985 sci-fi horror film never got the love it deserved, and it’s seriously underrated. The good news is, you can finally check it out – it’s streaming on Prime Video now!
Often overlooked in director Tobe Hooper’s filmography, falling between the successes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist, Lifeforce recently became available to stream on Prime Video on April 1st. This science fiction horror film, which blends elements of apocalyptic thrillers, is based on Colin Wilson’s 1976 novel The Space Vampires. The story follows a space shuttle crew who find an ancient alien spaceship near Halley’s Comet. They bring three strange, unconscious beings back to Earth, unknowingly unleashing a vampiric threat and widespread chaos that drains energy from London’s population.
Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce Is an Underrated Cult Classic
Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce is a wildly experimental film that doesn’t shy away from being over-the-top. It throws everything at the wall – starting with a space mission, then shifting to a London detective story, introducing space vampires, and ultimately unleashing a zombie outbreak – all in one movie. While chaotic and unpredictable, it somehow works, delivering a fast-paced, bizarre plot that’s surprisingly engaging. The film boldly combines sci-fi with vampire horror and eroticism, and benefits from remarkably well-done practical effects that still look good today.
Despite costing a significant $25 million to make – a huge amount back then – the movie Lifeforce wasn’t a success when it was first released. It only earned $11 million at the box office and received negative reviews from both critics and audiences (currently holding 58% and 46% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively). However, over time, Lifeforce has developed a devoted fanbase and is now celebrated as a uniquely bold and ambitious film that blends genres in a memorable way.
What’s New on Prime Video?
I was so excited to see Prime Video add Lifeforce to its lineup on April 1st, along with a bunch of other great movies! As a horror fan, I’m especially thrilled they’ve got both versions of Child’s Play, that hidden gem Dark Harvest, and classics like Killer Klowns from Outer Space and The Poughkeepsie Tapes. But it’s not just horror – they also added some fun titles like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, House of Gucci, Patch Adams, and even Spaceballs! And the good news keeps coming – before the month is over, they’re adding The Running Man, The Conjuring: Last Rites, and The House of the Spirits too. It’s a fantastic month for movie lovers!
