The main villain for the upcoming Vision Quest series might already be established within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Ultron is confirmed to appear, it’s currently unknown what major challenge Vision will face when Paul Bettany returns, and Marvel may not want to revisit the storyline from Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Marvel might choose a new villain for Vision to face instead. Interestingly, a character who could be a strong contender – second only to Ultron – has already been established somewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Mad Thinker In Marvel Comics Explained
At the start of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the movie quickly mentions several villains the Fantastic Four have fought in the past, showing the team’s history of overcoming challenges. It reveals they previously defeated a villain called the Mad Thinker.
First appearing in Fantastic Four #15 back in 1963, the Mad Thinker is one of the Fantastic Four’s longest-running enemies. Although he doesn’t have any superpowers, he’s a formidable opponent thanks to his incredibly high intelligence, scientific knowledge, and talent for strategy.
The Mad Thinker is a jack-of-all-trades, but he’s most famous for his work with artificial life. He’s built many androids over time, and some of them even developed the ability to think and feel. His most well-known creation is Awesome Andy, who became a popular Marvel character often manipulated by villains, including the Mad Thinker himself.
The Mad Thinker is closely connected to the Vision’s history. He initially contributed to the Vision’s creation by giving Ultron details about the original Human Torch, an android the Mad Thinker was fascinated with. After discovering Ultron had used the Human Torch to build the Vision, the Mad Thinker became determined to get his hands on the technology powering the Vision’s body.
What The Mad Thinker’s Role In Vision Quest Could Be
The Marvel Cinematic Universe changed how Vision was created, leaving out the original Human Torch’s involvement. However, a version of the Mad Thinker from the comics would likely be fascinated by Vision. Creating artificial life is his main goal, so it’s natural he’d be interested in Vision and other AI characters from the show.
It’s possible the Mad Thinker is involved in Ultron’s return. He’s brilliant and resourceful enough to have reactivated Ultron, perhaps for research purposes or to further his own malicious plans.
Even though The Fantastic Four: First Steps shows the Mad Thinker being defeated, it doesn’t prevent him from appearing in future Marvel Cinematic Universe stories. Since the movie is set in just one of many alternate realities within the MCU, another version of the Mad Thinker could still exist on the main Earth (Earth-616) and be a threat.
If Marvel Studios were to go in this direction, they could introduce Awesome Andy as a live-action character for the first time. He’d be a welcome addition to the MCU, potentially appearing in projects like Vision Quest or elsewhere. The same could be said for Dragon Man, another android from the comics who is closely linked to the villain, the Mad Thinker.
