The 3 Biggest Questions Avengers: Doomsday’s X-Men Trailer Raises

The X-Men are officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in the latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios is releasing trailers in an unconventional way, and this third of four focuses on the X-Men after the previous two highlighted Steve Rogers and Thor.

The trailer features Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and James Marsden as Cyclops. We see Professor X and Magneto amidst the ruins of the X-Mansion, and Cyclops using his optic blast with a Sentinel looming behind him. Despite lasting just one minute and eight seconds, the Doomsday trailer for the X-Men successfully builds anticipation for the return of these characters.

Even if the trailer for Doomsday doesn’t accurately reflect what’s in the actual movie, it still hints at some important things about the upcoming Marvel release.

Who Attacked The X-Mansion?

The X-Mansion is frequently attacked and damaged throughout the X-Men movies, so it wasn’t much of a shock to see it in ruins again in Avengers: Doomsday.

There’s damage everywhere – signs are lying on the floor, rooms are filled with rubble, and things have been knocked over. The big question is: who made such a mess of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters?

The trailer ends with Cyclops fighting amidst widespread destruction—we’ll discuss that later—and a massive Sentinel looming behind him. Meanwhile, Magneto and Professor X appear surprisingly calm while sitting among the ruins of the X-Mansion, hinting that an attack has already happened.

This version of the X-Men seems to have been battling Sentinels for a while. The damaged building might even be the work of Doctor Doom, as played by Robert Downey Jr. It’s possible a team from another universe – like the Avengers, the Fantastic Four from Earth-828, or another group we recognize – attacked the mutants.

The changes to the X-Mansion might be caused by the dangerous consequences of an impending attack. Instead of fighting a single villain or team, the heroes could be facing the collapse of the multiverse and the possible end of their entire universe – a threat that connects directly to the plot of Avengers: Doomsday.

Where Are The Rest Of The X-Men?

It’s exciting to see Professor X, Magneto, and Cyclops returning, but they aren’t the only X-Men characters confirmed for the movie. The official cast list for Avengers: Doomsday also includes Nightcrawler (played by Alan Cumming), Mystique (Rebecca Romijn), Beast (Kelsey Grammer), and Gambit (Channing Tatum). Plus, fans are anticipating appearances by Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman).

Notably, none of these characters appeared in the trailer for the X-Men movie, leading to concerns they may all be dead. It’s possible they died either during an attack on the mansion or as a consequence of the incursion event. This could also explain the absence of familiar faces like Jean Grey and Storm in the film.

Okay, so just because I didn’t see some of my favorite characters in the trailer doesn’t mean they’re gone for good! They could easily be off doing something else – maybe in the middle of a battle, or even just waiting for things to get tough during an attack. It’s also possible Marvel held them back because the trailer footage was made just to get us hyped, and they didn’t want to show everything right away. Honestly, I’m trying to stay optimistic and not jump to conclusions!

The limited appearance of other X-Men characters in the trailer might suggest they have less significant roles in the movie. Professor X, Magneto, and Cyclops could be the central figures in Doomsday, and the trailer’s focus on them likely reflects that, while other characters take a backseat.

Who (Or What) Is Cyclops Firing His Optic Blast At?

The trailer ends with a powerful shot of Cyclops removing his visor and firing a huge energy blast, signaling a grand finale. This moment is already being seen as a strong step towards rehabilitating the character after years of less favorable portrayals in the previous film series.

The visual of the blast is impressive, but it raises the question of why Cyclops is using it. He looks exhausted, suggesting he’s been through a tough fight before reaching this point. It’s unclear what triggered the optic blast – several possibilities exist.

Cyclops could be the last hope for protecting the X-Mansion from any attacker, whether it’s Doctor Doom, the Sentinels, or another enemy. It’s understandable that, after trying everything else and perhaps losing his friends, he might unleash a powerful, unrestrained blast as a final resort.

This could also explain what just happened. In the X-Men films, Cyclops often fires his energy beam when he’s deeply upset, in pain, or heartbroken. If he saw someone he cared about die – maybe even Professor X again – then the beam might have been a way to let out his emotions, rather than a calculated move in a fight.

If that’s not what’s happening, maybe Cyclops is acting this way because of an invasion. He might be unleashing a powerful optic blast as a final attempt to prevent his world from being destroyed. This would mean he’s making a desperate, heroic effort to save himself and his entire universe, making the situation even more critical, especially if this is happening in Avengers: Doomsday.
