Capcom consistently adds extra content to Resident Evil games to encourage players to return after completing the main story. They want to give fans good value and keep subsequent playthroughs interesting with new items and modes. However, these additions aren’t meant to be easily acquired. Capcom avoids making overpowered items readily available, as that would diminish the tension and suspense that defines the survival horror experience. While they aim for a challenge, sometimes those challenges can be excessively difficult, creating some of the most demanding moments in gaming.
Here are the six hardest items to obtain in the Resident Evil series.
6) Cat Ears – Resident Evil 4 Remake

Leon’s Cat Ears aren’t just a fun cosmetic item – they also give him unlimited ammo for all weapons except the rocket launcher. This is a huge advantage, which is why Capcom made getting them quite challenging.
Want to unlock the Cat Ears? You’ll need to beat the game on Professional difficulty and get an S+ rank. That means finishing Resident Evil 4 quickly – in under five and a half hours – because the S+ rank requires a speedrun. It’s also pretty challenging: you can only save the game 15 times, or you’ll have to start from the beginning. And to make it even harder, you need to start a new game – New Game+ isn’t allowed.
5) LZ Answerer – Resident Evil Village

Completing the LZ Answerer is noticeably easier now compared to when it first came out. Without the addition of strong characters like Lady D and Chris Redfield to Mercenaries mode, it would be ranked even higher. However, it’s still a tough challenge, so be prepared!
This weapon resembles a lightsaber from Star Wars and allows you to quickly defeat enemies. You unlock it by achieving an SS rank on every stage in Mercenaries mode. Initially, this felt almost impossible, especially when playing as Ethan at the game’s release. While still challenging with the new characters added, it’s now much more achievable.
4) Minigun/ATM-4 – Resident Evil 2 Remake

These rewards all require the same challenging task: completing either Claire or Leon’s story mode on Hardcore difficulty with a perfect S+ rank. To get the Minigun, choose Claire; if you’re after the rocket launcher, play as Leon.
You’ll need to complete Scenario A in under 2.5 hours and Scenario B in under 2 hours. It’s a challenging time limit, and with only three save slots, mistakes can be costly – encountering Mr. X in the wrong place might force you to restart. Luckily, you have unlimited ammo for both weapons, which makes the difficulty manageable.
3) Infinite Ammo – Resident Evil 7

To get the classic version of Resident Evil within RE7, you first have to beat the game on Madhouse difficulty. This makes the game much harder with fewer save points, tougher enemies, and hidden Antique Coins.
Resident Evil 7 is already a pretty frightening game, but turning up the difficulty to the point where even one hit from an enemy can kill you is incredibly challenging. You’ll need to know the game’s levels and secrets really well to beat it, and even then, it’s a good idea to check a walkthrough before you start.
2) Katana – Resident Evil: Revelations 2

Capcom is starting to make things feel unfair in Resident Evil: Revelations 2. Once you unlock the incredibly powerful katana, enemies fall quickly. But getting it requires mastering the game’s levels – you’ll need to learn them inside and out.
To get the katana, you have to complete Revelations 2 in Invisible Mode. This mode makes all enemies invisible! You can only see where they are by using Natalia’s ability to briefly reveal their location. Otherwise, you’ll need to memorize the levels and pay close attention to your surroundings. Surprisingly, the invisible enemies aren’t even the hardest part!
1) Handcannon – Resident Evil 4

The Handcannon in the original Resident Evil 4 is the truly difficult weapon to unlock. You need to earn five stars with every character on all Mercenaries stages. It sounds simple, but it’s a real challenge!
To earn a five-star rating, you need to consistently get kills without stopping – maintaining a combo. Without a high enough score multiplier from these combos, you won’t reach the target. But the levels in Mercenaries are huge, making it really difficult to keep those combos going. It’s a good idea to look up some guides before you start, or be prepared to spend a lot of time figuring out a winning strategy. Thankfully, the Handcannon can usually defeat enemies with a single shot, which makes the effort worthwhile.
