The 7 Best Sinister Six Storylines in Spider-Man Comics

The Sinister Six is a classic Marvel Comics supervillain team, notable for bringing together six enemies to fight a single hero: Spider-Man. The team first appeared early in Spider-Man’s comic book history, after each villain had already faced and lost to him individually – sometimes multiple times. Despite their combined efforts, they consistently failed to defeat Spider-Man, but remained a constant source of trouble for him. Over the years, the lineup of the Sinister Six has changed, with some members appearing more frequently than others, and the quality of their storylines varying.

Here is a look at the seven best Sinister Six storylines in Marvel Comics, ranked.

7) Return of the Sinister Six (1999)

Several stories have featured the Sinister Six returning, and this one, from 1999, focused on Sandman. After years of being a hero, Sandman went back to being a villain and rebuilt the Sinister Six. He did this to get revenge on Doctor Octopus, who had turned him into glass, and on an old teammate.

Sandman’s attempt to lead a team of villains against Doc Ock hit a snag when Venom lost interest and started fighting his own teammates. This story, featured in The Amazing Spider-Man #12, was entertaining, particularly seeing Venom attack Sandman, Electro, and Kraven. It even led to Eddie Brock temporarily giving up villainy.

6) Superior Foes Of Spider-Man

Many fans consider Superior Foes Of Spider-Man the most fun Sinister Six comic ever, largely because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The team wasn’t filled with incredibly powerful villains – Shocker was their biggest threat, with Boomerang also playing a key role. Rounding out the group were Beetle, Overdrive, and Speed Demon, all of whom jokingly believed they were Spider-Man’s most dangerous enemies when they first came together.

This comic featured a team-up, but even though Spider-Man was in the title, he didn’t appear much. The story mainly focused on the new Sinister Six – though they only had five members, as they couldn’t find a sixth villain to join. The series lasted 17 issues and centered around the villains planning a big robbery. It was a really enjoyable read and one of the funniest Marvel comics of the past ten years.

5) The Last Stand

“The Last Stand” was a story arc published by Marvel Comics under their Marvel Knights label, appearing in issues #10-12 of Marvel Knights Spider-Man. The story featured a larger version of the Sinister Six, now with twelve members: Boomerang, Chameleon, Green Goblin, Electro, Sandman, Hydro-Man, Hammerhead, Lizard, Shocker, Tombstone, Venom, and Vulture.

Okay, so this storyline was all about a bunch of villains teaming up to take down Spider-Man, and it was totally Green Goblin pulling the strings – even forcing some of them to participate! Thankfully, Spider-Man has Black Cat helping him out, but things get really intense when Aunt May gets kidnapped and her life is on the line. Honestly, I loved this story. The fights were epic, especially that moment when Goblin dangled MJ from a bridge – it was a clear nod to Gwen Stacy, and it really raised the stakes!

4) The Sinister Six (first appearance)

Spider-Man’s earliest foes in the comics – including The Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Electro, and Sandman – grew to include characters like Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio during his second year. In The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, these six villains surprisingly joined forces to battle Spider-Man after he’d defeated them one by one. This kind of villain team-up was rare at the time; usually, groups like the Avengers formed to fight a single, incredibly powerful threat, not the other way around.

The villains strategized about how to defeat Spider-Man. Electro questioned Doc Ock’s confidence, but Kraven believed a team effort was the way to go, and Ock assured them he had a guaranteed plan. Their strategy was straightforward: each villain would fight Spider-Man individually, wearing him down—a tactic similar to one Bane used against Batman years before. While it wasn’t as chaotic as an all-out assault, it’s remarkable that Spider-Man, who was still a teenager and had temporarily lost his powers, managed to win against them all.

3) Ends Of The Earth

As a huge Spider-Man fan, I always thought “Ends of the Earth” was a really clever story. Doctor Octopus cooked up this insane plan to actually cause a global disaster – speeding up the Greenhouse Effect – and then position himself as the world’s only savior! To pull it off, he assembled a seriously dangerous Sinister Six: himself, Mysterio, Sandman, Electro, Rhino, and Chameleon. It was a threat that was way too big for Spider-Man to handle on his own, so he had to team up with the Avengers and even Black Cat to save the day. It really showed how desperate things were!

The ‘Sinister Six’ story arc unfolded in 2012, beginning with issues #682-687 of Amazing Spider-Man, and continuing in Amazing Spider-Man: Ends of the Earth #1 and Avenging Spider-Man #8. Like the original Sinister Six encounter, Doctor Octopus orchestrated the villains’ team-up. However, this time, they scattered across the globe, embarking on an international adventure after the United Nations sided with Doc Ock.

2) Sinister War

As a huge Spider-Man fan, I have to say that Sinister War was absolutely massive! It brought together every member of the Sinister Six ever – a truly epic scale. It all happened during the big Kindred storyline in 2021, written by Nick Spencer and Matthew Rosenberg. Basically, Kindred made each member of the Six an offer they couldn’t refuse – destroy Spider-Man, and get what they wanted. So, they all joined forces in a full-on attack!

After a long hiatus, Sandman is back as a villain, and Doctor Octopus has fully reverted to his evil ways following his time as the Superior Spider-Man. The story featured a massive team-up of various villain groups – including the Sinister Six, Superior Foes, and others – all uniting to battle Spider-Man. The conflict ultimately concluded with a classic Sinister Six twist: a betrayal, something the group is notorious for, as they’ve always struggled with trust.

1) The Return of the Sinister Six (1990)

Many fans consider “The Return of the Sinister Six” from 1990 to be the greatest Sinister Six story. It featured Doctor Octopus reforming the classic team – Electro, Mysterio, Sandman, and Vulture – and adding a new member, the Hobgoblin (Jason Macendale). Their incredibly evil plan involved poisoning the entire world with a satellite, holding everyone hostage to achieve their goals.

The plot was completely over-the-top – Doc Ock even blackmailed Sandman into returning to villainy! It all came down to Doc Ock wanting to be seen as the ultimate supervillain, and he manipulated his fellow team members to get there. The inevitable betrayal felt natural, and overall, this Sinister Six story was a blast – easily the best one ever, with Doc Ock at his most menacing.
