Superhero movies have become incredibly popular and diverse, taking over the film industry. We’ve seen everything from lighthearted, optimistic adventures like those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to darker, more serious stories from DC. This variety keeps the genre fresh and proves that superhero stories can be about anything – from silly comedies and intense political dramas to epic space adventures and deeply personal character explorations. No matter the style, exciting action sequences remain a key part of what makes these movies so appealing.
Some heroes prefer to disable enemies without seriously harming them, or use impressive displays of power. But others fight with a brutal, realistic physicality. This leads to scenes that stretch the boundaries of what’s acceptable for a PG-13 audience, or, with an R-rating, deliver violence that truly stays with you. These intense moments highlight the life-or-death nature of the conflicts, making them both shocking and memorable.
7) The Punisher vs. The Russian (The Punisher)

Often missed when people talk about comic book movies, The Punisher features one of the most fun and memorable fight scenes ever filmed. The movie centers on Frank Castle (Thomas Jane), a former FBI agent who becomes a vigilante seeking revenge on the criminals who killed his family. Before the story wraps up, Frank is attacked in his apartment by a massive assassin called The Russian (Kevin Nash). What happens next is a brutal but surprisingly playful fight – The Russian throws Frank around like a toy, barely reacting to stabs and bullets, while Frank fights back using anything he can find, from boiling water to stairs, to overcome his stronger opponent. The fight ends with a shocking and violent moment involving a weight bench, making it a standout action sequence from the early 2000s.
6) Hit-Girl’s Hallway Takedown (Kick-Ass)

The movie Kick-Ass offered a fresh, unconventional take on superheroes, but it truly shocked audiences with the introduction of Hit-Girl, played by Chloë Grace Moretz. Unlike the film’s other clumsy, inexperienced heroes, Hit-Girl is a genuinely dangerous, highly-trained fighter, despite being a child. The climax features her infiltrating a criminal fortress, initially disguised as an innocent schoolgirl. This disguise quickly vanishes as she unleashes a stunning and brutal attack. The ensuing hallway fight is a masterclass in stylized violence, showcasing her incredible skill with both a staff and firearms as she swiftly defeats a dozen adult men. The contrast between her young appearance and her deadly efficiency is shocking and unsettling, creating a thrilling but disturbing scene that pushes boundaries and delivers a powerful adrenaline rush.
5) Peacemaker vs. Rick Flag (The Suicide Squad)

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad features plenty of extreme violence, but the fight between Peacemaker (John Cena) and Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) is particularly brutal and personal. While the team demolishes the secret Jotunheim lab, a disagreement arises over whether to reveal damaging information about America’s role in the experiments. Flag, who acts as the team’s conscience, believes the truth should be public, but Peacemaker is ordered to cover it up. The resulting fight is raw and chaotic, unlike the carefully planned battles often seen in superhero movies. They fight using whatever they can find – broken pieces of the building and scattered debris – desperately trying to gain an edge as the structure collapses around them. When Peacemaker ultimately kills Flag by stabbing him with a piece of porcelain, it’s a deeply shocking moment. Flag’s dying words, calling Peacemaker a failure, are more impactful than the physical blow, clearly disturbing Peacemaker and leaving him unsettled by what he’s done.
4) Superman vs. General Zod Final Fight (Man of Steel)

The movie Man of Steel offered a fresh, more realistic take on Superman, leading to a hugely destructive and divisive final battle. Superman (Henry Cavill) clashes with General Zod (Michael Shannon), a Kryptonian determined to destroy humanity and rebuild Krypton. The fight is incredibly violent, with the two powerful beings causing massive devastation to the city of Metropolis. Each blow creates a sonic boom, and the resulting damage is enormous. Despite the large scale, the fight becomes intensely personal when Zod threatens to kill a family with his heat vision, forcing Superman to make a terrible decision. The conflict ends abruptly and shockingly with Superman breaking Zod’s neck, a moment that deeply affects him and marks a departure from his traditional heroic image.
3) Rorschach’s Prison Takedown (Watchmen)

Zack Snyder’s film Watchmen stays true to the grim and serious mood of the original comic, and this is especially clear in the prison scene with Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley). When Rorschach is falsely imprisoned, he finds himself among the criminals he previously sent to jail. During a mealtime, a large inmate tries to attack him with a makeshift weapon. Rorschach responds instantly and with brutal force. He quickly overpowers the attacker, breaks the protective glass divider, and throws scalding hot fryer oil in the inmate’s face. The victim’s screams and the sound of the oil hitting his skin create a truly shocking moment. This fight isn’t about impressive moves; it’s about Rorschach establishing complete control through fear. He then tells the other prisoners that they are the ones trapped with him, which perfectly shows how terrifying he is.
2) Batman’s Warehouse Brawl (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice)

As a critic, I have to say the warehouse scene in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice really cemented Ben Affleck as the definitive Batman for a lot of fans, and I get why. It’s basically like watching the Arkham video games come to life. This Batman doesn’t mess around; he moves with incredible speed and just annihilates the mercenaries sent by KGBeast. Forget the more restrained or overly dramatic Batmans we’ve seen before. This guy is a brutal, efficient fighting machine, using everything at his disposal – gadgets, grappling hooks, pure strength – and the choreography really sells the power behind every punch. It’s clear this is a Batman who’s been fighting crime for years and isn’t holding back anymore. It’s a shockingly visceral and effective sequence.
1) Wolverine vs. X-24 (Logan)

As a huge movie fan, I have to say Logan was the perfect send-off for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. What really struck me was how they finally let loose with the R-rating, giving us the raw, brutal violence we’d been hoping for since the comics. The whole film feels incredibly gritty, but the fight between old Logan and his clone, X-24, is just…intense. X-24 is terrifying, just cutting through everyone without a second thought. When those two Wolverines finally go at it, it’s a brutal mess of claws tearing through everything. It’s not fun to watch, it’s painful, bloody, and completely draining. And it’s so much more than just action; seeing Logan get physically broken down by a version of himself, representing his own inner demons, is truly heartbreaking. What I appreciated most is that the violence wasn’t just there for shock value. It actually meant something, reflecting a lifetime of rage and making that final fight the most brutal and impactful I’ve ever seen in a superhero movie.
