The 7 Most Iconic Alien Races in DC, Ranked

When we gaze out into the infinite expanse of space, it’s hard not to ponder if other forms of life exist beyond our planet. In the realm of the DC Universe, this question is indeed answered affirmatively. The DC Comics universe is teeming with diverse alien species spread across the cosmos, many of them capable of traversing the galaxies. These creatures come in all shapes and sizes, each boasting their unique cultures and technologies. Some of these alien civilizations encompass hundreds of worlds, while others are on the brink of extinction. The capabilities of these extraterrestrial beings range widely, with some possessing advanced technology, others born with innate superpowers, and still others trained to be formidable warriors. Many iconic DC characters, both heroes and villains, hail from alien planets and either come to Earth as protectors or invaders.

Regardless of whether they resemble us or possess green skin, numerous alien species from science fiction are among the most renowned examples of extraterrestrial life.

7) Rannians

Residents of the planet Rann, known as Rannians, share a resemblance to humans but possess an incredibly sophisticated technology, such as jetpacks, airborne vehicles, energy weapons, and spacecraft. Their most remarkable invention is the Zeta Beam, capable of teleporting individuals across the cosmos. This Zeta Beam was responsible for inadvertently transporting human archaeologist Adam Strange to Rann, where he emerged as a hero. Adam wedded a Rannian named Aleena and together they had a daughter named after her mother. The Rannians have a historic enmity towards their extraterrestrial adversaries, the militaristic Thanagarians, frequently engaging in conflicts with them.

6) Oans

In a cosmic context, the enigmatic beings referred to as the Oans, often called the Cosmic Guardians, are thought to be the initial forms of intelligent life in the universe. Their home planet, Oa, is situated at the heart of the universe. These eternal entities have striven tirelessly to establish order and justice throughout the cosmos, even attempting to form various intergalactic peacekeeping forces.

Unfortunately, their first endeavor, an army of robots named the Manhunters, turned chaotic when these mechanical beings rebelled and caused massive destruction, killing trillions. In the wake of this catastrophe, the Oans abandoned the Manhunters and ventured down a new path. By tapping into the potent green energy of willpower, the Oans crafted Green Lantern rings and subsequently established the Green Lantern Corps. These mystical artifacts were distributed throughout the universe in search of worthy individuals capable of harnessing their boundless power to uphold justice. Due to the Oans’ efforts, the universe now has the Green Lantern Corps as its defenders.

5) Coluans

The green-skinned extraterrestrial beings known as the Coluans, hailing from their home planet Colu, are among the universe’s smartest species. Their intellect is akin to that of a supercomputer, with data and logic shaping every aspect of their civilization. Thanks to genetic engineering, they possess an exceptionally long lifespan, often living for hundreds of years. Among them stands out the powerful, brilliant, and radical entity named Brainiac. Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Brainiac has been responsible for the deaths of billions. In his relentless quest for information, he shrinks and encapsulates entire cities to dissect and archive their data. Post-analysis, he annihilates the original planet of the city, ensuring that only he possesses access to the knowledge he has amassed. Brainiac is one of Superman’s oldest and formidable adversaries. However, it’s worth noting that not all Coluans share Brainiac’s destructive obsession with knowledge. In fact, his descendant, Brainiac 5, has become an invaluable member of the Legion of Superheroes.

4) Tamaraneans

Starfire, a prominent member of the Teen Titans and known as Princess Koriand’r, originates from the Tamaranean society, a peace-loving civilization residing on the planet Tamaran. This civilization, with orange skin, relies more on emotions rather than reasoning. Due to an alien race called the Citadel’s invasion, they were compelled to transform into skilled warriors for self-defense. The brutal war continued for over a century until Starfire’s sister, Blackfire, who envied Starfire’s fame, traitorously aided the Citadel in the near-complete destruction of the Tamaraneans. Unfortunately, the remnants of this devastated civilization scattered across various planets. Tamaraneans can amplify their strength with sunlight and fly, but their most peculiar ability is their unique capacity to instantly learn any language by sharing a kiss with a native speaker on the lips.

3) Thanagarians

The dynamic pair, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, belong to a race of winged warriors called the Thanagarians, hailing from the planet Thanagar. Their civilization has had complex relationships with humans, at times acting as allies, while other instances seeing them as adversaries. On Earth, they’ve occasionally sought conquest but also aimed to form alliances against common threats. Endowed with exceptional physical strength and flight, the Thanagarians’ deadliest asset is Nth Metal – an extraterrestrial element. This metal is utilized in crafting potent weapons such as Hawkgirl’s mace. It possesses properties that can manipulate gravity, amplify power, and even counteract and shield against magic. Regardless of their allegiance, the Thanagarians are among the galaxy’s mightiest warriors.

2) Martians

As a devoted aficionado of science fiction tales, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring countless alien species throughout my movie-reviewing career. Among them, few are as deeply ingrained in our collective imagination as the Martians, a legacy forged by DC Comics. This celestial race can be divided into two distinct groups based on their skin color: the tranquil Green Martians and the belligerent White Martians. The latter were notorious warmongers who, in a devastating civil war, almost wiped out the entire population of their peaceful counterparts.

One of the last surviving Green Martians, J’onn J’onzz, also known as the Martian Manhunter, found refuge from the carnage when he was inadvertently transported to Earth. Here, he established a new life for himself. The Martian race boasts some of the most formidable abilities in the cosmos, including telepathy, shapeshifting, telekinesis, invisibility, heat vision, super strength, and flight, making J’onn J’onzz one of the Justice League’s mightiest members.

1) Kryptonians

The fateful day a compact spaceship carrying an infant from the planet Krypton struck Kansas soil marked a pivotal moment in the DC Universe’s timeline. With Superman’s significant influence shaping the superhero genre, the Kryptonians have become the most renowned and impactful alien race in comic book lore. Hailing from an advanced civilization that orbited around a red sun, the tragic fate of Krypton was the same for all: it exploded, taking its inhabitants with it. A fortunate few, like Superman and his cousin Supergirl, survived this destruction. Among these survivors are notable figures such as General Zod and his followers, who strive to rebuild a Kryptonian empire. Kryptonians, such as Superman, gain extraordinary abilities when exposed to the light of a yellow sun: they can fly, possess heat-vision, super hearing, freeze breath, and have near-infinite strength and speed. Although there are few Kryptonians remaining in the universe, those who survived have become some of the most iconic characters, both hero and villain, within DC Comics.
